Exhaustion

Hi all again,

One thing that really worries me now; I'm 5 weeks post THR tomorrow ( first was in February), and I'm still becoming easily tired, often exhausted, doing relatively simple things i.e. a set of exercises, where I have to lie down for an hour or two after. Is this normal at my stage of recovery?

I know the feeling I am 5 weeks post op went for a long walk yesterday and came back crackerd today I am totally shattered not sure if I'm overdoing things but I could sleep for Britain at the moment ...

Jem it is perfectly normal. I was told to lay down every afternoon for two hours whether I slept or not. It certainly helped. Did that for eight weeks before I returned to work. Sometimes I slept others I just rested. It is major surgery and it takes time to recover. Think it took me around three months to get over the tiredness. X

HI Jem.

I am feeling the same but I agree with the other posts that we all maybe expect too much. I also just had my second HR over 2 weeks ago, first in March and felt tired for quite s while after that and anticipate the same this time. Probs 2-3 months.

I think because it's not medical major surgery we expect too much.

I will try to regularly have 2 hours on the bed, the times I do I often fall asleep so maybe that's a sign.

You will get there, be patient which is best long term.

Best wishes. A X

I'm so glad it's not just me and you're all right, of course, we expect too much too soon, but am glad I checked with you all. Thanks, I'm finding this group so helpful.

Hello. Please remember that you are only 5 weeks post THR.  This is major surgery. I had to rememer that after my anterior THR.  I was up and walking. My PT from my surgeon was "walk, walk, walk".  You do what you can. Those muscles you are asking to help you do the things you use to do before your hip started failing are weak. It takes a fraction of the time to make them weak than it does to build them back up.  I am 4 months out today and I am able to go up and down the stair without hanging onto the railing, foot over foot but when I get to the top, I feel like I climbed a huge mountain. My muscles are slowly building up and it's going to take a while.  Be patient.  Stick with it. I was  also told by my sureon to increase my protein, it helps with muscle building. I find it difficult because I'm not a big meat eater and many of the vegetable based proteins are not among the vegetables I like to eat or I'm allergic to.  So I did get some protein powder to add to my daily intake.  I get exhausted too and I'm just a bit behind you in the op date. I believe you meant to say 5 months and not 5 weeks.  Stick with it, build those muscles slowly and safely.  There's lots of YouTube exercises to do there. I went to PT to assist with muscle strength, maybe that is an option for you. But I still got tired and I mean the kind of tired where a nap was in order.  But I was told I was demanding a lot from those large muscles that have not been used in a while and it's to be expected.  Being tired months after major surgery is normal.  I find that as the time goes by I am not as tired as I was a week or so ago, so I am noticing improvement. If you are not noticing improvement, you may want to discuss that with your surgeon.  Keep up the good work, it's a journey well worth the trek!

Thanks. I am just 5 weeks out not 5 months so maybe I need a good talking to! Hope you keep moving forward and I shall

learn to be patient. x

Oh, I was confused.  You had said February and 5 weeks out.  Yes, patience helps too.  I whine sometimes.  No one cares anymore but it helps me get through it!!! LOL  So you are VERY new at 5 weeks.  I think you are expecting a lot of your recovery.  Just take it one day at a time and don't give up!

Yes my first THR was in February and second at the end of June. I suppose I just need reassurance that it's goimg ok.

Hi jem

I think that this is normal -

Healing takes a lot of energy, and you had 2 major invasive surgeries 4 months apart ---

you were barely recovered from 1st THR and had your 2nd -

It is annoying, isn't it, but just accept that it is ... listen to your body and go with your own flow --- lying down, taking naps, it is all part of it ..

I was in bad physical shape prior to surgery - that didn't help ... after 1st THR, other hip needed surgery too and this was unexpected (to me) -

New hip had to deal with bad hip while healing - big delay and exhausting -

to be honest, I am many moons post-op and still have bouts  of fatigue -

Great tips given ...

how are you doing otherwise?

big warm hug
