Eye discomfort after cataract surgery

Well done with allergy tests ..very positive!

hope your health is good now

Went to dr to day ..he was very amenable to eye drops looked up ones without preservatives

gave meCarmellose 0.5per cent ?they come in individual little off tubes ...throw always

thought you or some others in forum woul be interested

I am a bit confused , I have been writing to Derek and carol .

nothing I wrote on this page ..it seems most of you have posted these comments long time ago

my dr gave me carmellose . Individual little sachets .handy but eyes still irritated.. As someone said . It's as if you have had contacts in for too long

even the eye I have not had done is sharp and nightly discomfort

I had one cataract done about month ago

Hi, I had my left eye operated on 5 days ago and am experiencing the same flickering when I look from side to side particularly if the light source is to my left.  Very annoying flickering but my visual acuity is super.  Has your symptom improved with time? I'm almost afraid to ask!. I read somewhere that it took a person with similar symptoms from 9 to 12 months to resolve itself.

Thank you for telling me that as it gives me hope, which is such a precious thing.  No I am 5 months since the operation and I still have a very damaged eye.  Sorry.

Carol, I am so sorry you are going through such a trying time.  I'm not a physician but I'm wondering if you could be allergic or sensitive to the drops?

I've been (what we in the US call nearsighted) since I was 5 years old but have worn contact lenses most of my life and have been satisfied except now with the cataracts I went for an operation.   I'm going a bit crazy with the flickering light symptom that was immediate after the procedure.  My husband says to ignore it...easier said than done. especially since I go for my other eye operation in a week, ugh!

It was good connecting with you and wish you well. Let me know how you are doing.

What were you told at your follow up examination as to the cause of the flickering?

Hi Derek:  My doctor examined me the day after, which is usual in the US and as I continued to complain, he examined me yesterday (3 days later) again.  He gave me an extremely thorough exam and said that there was nothing he could attribute the phenomenon to and believes that with time it will diminish or completely disappear. He could not assure me that it would not occur  in my right eye when operated on in a week's time.

If I look down my nose at whatever or whoever I am looking at I don't see the flickering as much but  that's a bit awkward!  Well, I'm off to see Midsomer Murders which are popular here in the Northeast as are so many series from the UK.

Be well.

As I understand it, he cannot actually see the problem on examination and the phenomena is only visible to the sufferer? When he shines a bright light into your eye to examine it does that worsen it?

Does the flicker of the TV affect it?

Do you get Midsomer on PBS or a regular network? I've grown rather tired of their unlikey story lines and my favourite character is now the dog:-)

Hi carol , I am having messages and they are all way out of date ..strange

it went for check up after having had one eye done

was told they don't want to do other one at present which means more expenses on glasses , sunglasses for driving

my own optician strongly disagrees as I was in the system and now out of it ,,he says it will not be long before he has to refer me back ..work for him Back to end of waiting list for me

hope you resolved your issues ..I still have dry eye in both eyes .strange

good luck .

Nanulance  What are you using for your dry eyes, I have tried many, many drops but they all seem to make my eyes worse i.e. making the surface of the eye very sore and make my eyes even drier, even ones without preserative.  Have you found any solutions??

The dog is actually very cute. We get the British programs on PBS only.   The phenomena occurs with a light source to my left.  The operation was on the left eye.  The sense one gets is that the light is reflecting through jelly within the eye, that's as best as I can describe it.  Like a flicker throughout the eye. When the doctor shines a bright light into the eye I don't see the the flickering.

Hi Derek76: I received your M.Men email but could not answer via the same method as it said there was a computer error.  But I agree, lots of time went into it but this is the last season!

Nanulance: I received a notice that you wrote to me a comment but I cannot find it.  If you have not, please ignore otherwise, try again.

Sorry Vera , having problem with entering discussions ..

don't think I wrote to you ..

I seem to get notes daily then find in most cases they are months old ,bit confusing

have be good day

Hi , think it's carmellose I was given .. No preservative ..optician said it's one of the best .. Still find it only helps for short period , but if you saw my message above  I am not having other eye done at present ..disappointed as it will need done

I picked up a booklet when at the hospital today ," Dry Eye Patient Information" that is very informative.

I can't post the link as it is commercial but if you Google scope ophthalmics you should find it.

Derek how are you now? I'm having much discomfort in my right eye, which was the second eye done. Yes it feels like contacts from long ago,but can't take it out. Very difficult to sleep. They said to give it a month, but the left eye never felt this bad. Just wanted to know how you are doing?

Everything is fine now. I'm sorry to hear that you are still having a problem. I recently read about heated eyebags that help dry eyes

and other conditions but the article concluded that using a hot compress on the eye was just as good.

Look for MGDRX EyeBag on EBay.

.

Hi Derek

I also had very much the same thing, but it sounds like you have the facility to see someone, and you should take that opportunity as it is available and being offered. I went to Southampton Eye unit, and they have no such facilty. the eye casuality actually told me off for going there, and said I couldnt come without an appointment. I had my op beginning of June, and have resorted to now going private to see and eye specialist, because they kept delaying my appointments which are now sceduled for beginning of January!!!!

Now back to yourself (sorry I just feel so miserable about my own situation) I also had and still have the same feeling in the outer corner of my eye. I was allergic to nearly all eye drops, and had the preservative free ones, the anti-biotic was ok but the anti-inflammatory was not. so you may well be allergic to what you have been given. Do try to get those as it may help. I now have very good sight in my operated eye, but the discomfort is something which I think is only slightly improving. I told them I was allergic to metal, and I wonder if your may have been the same. The clip which you may recall was used to keep you eye open during the op, may have damaged/or prompted a reaction. I am fairly sure this is my situation, as it is in exactly the same area as you describe. My allergic reaction started within a few hours of the op, was yours ok intitially? I do now see that you posted your letter a year ago, so all of this has been in vain. However, I would like to know how you are now, and what has happened along the way, as, of course yours was actually done before mine.
