Eye floaters and other anxiety symptoms

I am currently suffering a severe bout of anxiety - the 4th in my life. I am 41 and a single parent  I'm trying to manage without medication although have taken it in the past.  My body is testing me with different symptoms every few weeks.  The one i'm struggling with at the moment is bad eye floaters.  I know i have them its just they 'appear' (i hope) to be worse and this is making me really stressed and panicky.  Has anyone else had this and then they improved or their attitude to them improved?  I feel like i'm going to go blind or something and it is really getting me down.  I am a trying to manage this so i can have a life with my son.  Thank you

Floaters? My Eyes twitches and feels soo pressured, and heavy!

Hi also have really bad anxiety and I have eye floaters, I get them the more I'm stressed.. I also think I'm going blind, I just booked for an eye test as I've convinced myself I'm going blind or there's something else wrong, I know is me panicking making it worse and I'm dreading having my eye test incase they say something else is wrong x

Indeed eye floaters are always worse for me when anxiety is bad. Or rather u notice them.more, most people do have them, but when we're anxious we are hyper aware and notice these normal things more readily. They aren't a sign of anything serious unless u see flashes of light - if u see that its a sign of a detached retina, but that's a whole different problem. Eye floaters in themselves are harmless and ull notice them less in time

First thing if your pregnant and are seeing these you need to go to the doctor as it could be a sign of preeclampsia. If your not pregnant it can be from anxiety but it can also be from dehydration, stress, and high blood pressure. Drink a lot of water and find a calming place to sit with your feet up. If it doesn't go away in the next day or so I would see a doctor to be sure it's nothing serious.

Thanks Carrie - its sometimes good to know someone is feeling the same althought i don't want anyone to feel this bad! i've been to doctors today but she was new and younger than me and doesn't know me. i just don't trust her judgement. I know i will have to arrange some other test before i'm satisfied. Just wish i could ignore them. xx

Thankyou i don' t feel too alone with this now.x

If you must check with anyone then check with a optician, a doctor would only refer u there. An optician would turn u away if there were no accompanying flashes of light. I know because I've been there and a member of my family is an opthalmologist. Eye floaters occur in such a large proportion of people, anxiety just makes us notice them, and then we obsess and keep noticing them.  So check with optician if it will ease your mind, but u can be sure its likely nothing to worry about

Thank you.  I only know one of my friends or family who have experienced this so everyone else thinks i'm wierd!.  The young inexperienced doctor today didn't help. I think i'm hyper sensitive to all my body sensations at the moment.

Thanks

x

At first all my symptoms cause me to go from anxiety to panic disorder. God there's nothing more scary than panic disorder. I thought i lost control of my mind and wanted to die.

I get so many different symptoms with anxiety.

Ibs,muscle pain, twitches, headaches, sinus pressure ,blurred vision and now floters.

I could swear i was gonna get MLS.

The fastest way to get rid of the symptoms is to ignore them. I know its hard sometimes cause there is some pain .

I write here even a year later cause i know they are plenty of panic people out there.

The biggest help is knowning its just stress.

You don't have ,mls, brain tumor or cancer is just stress. Just find a way to get rid of stress.

I have eye issues but i get these lights, blink then lights, mostly when tired, weird circle lights, thats PVD part, if im tired my eyes get weird, migraines, floaters, a lot of eye issues that scare the crap out of me. Because i have been diagnosed with all different eye stuff makes it all worse. a good attitude i would think decrease the headache aspect. I have no clue how all this eye crap happened. They say some virus i had. The lights, whether they are pieces, circle, flashes suck. When well rested and calm its calmer.  I use suppliments, drink water, pray..i dont know. Floaters as well. I have one eye that develeooed optic nerve pallor and some peripheral vision issue as well. I love to see, i love vision very freightening. Have specialist for it see them now twice a year, i used to have to go every four months. they watch it. Im Too nervous to even panic with it because it will raise bp and can cause issues. So i calmly pray and am scared. Keep busy. Waiting for technology or a miracle to come my way. I cant use any anxiety medicine or allergy medicine i have to be so careful now. So anything with the eyes i understand the fear.

Hi,you know i have eye issues as well. My anxiety is so bad lately. Can I ask why you cant take an anxirety med. If i didnt take one i couldnt deal with this at all, i barely do now. Xx

Stoo trying to fight thru the fear in this one. Go and get an eye exam. Its needed. You will have all your answers and all this anxiety it is producing is unneeded. Health anxiety, anxiety, gad..whatever you have  is irrelevant. This isnt something you need to stress out over or ignore its a quick exam at an optician or an eye doctor. Go get the eye exam.

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd put you at ease :-) I'm 30 and have suffered from floaters for many years . I do suffer from anxiety and stress and the last month had a period of intense anxiety and stress .I started to notice the floaters seemed worse and more of them!!! Before they were there bit not that noticeable and I could forget about them. It got to the point I booked myself and eye test as I started to think I was going blind I had put off the eye rest for so long as I was so afraid of what they may say! Fear not everyone! I'm so glad I went! The optician wa lovely I felt so stupid as I started crying there! She said it's a very common thing she checked my eyes , did the eye drops to see even further to the bsck of my eye she said both eyes were very healthy it's just a breakdown of the jelly fluid substance in the eye that causes floaters. She said with time I should notice them less. Especially as my mind has been put to ease . I've now got glasses for computer and reading what I needed but never had as I was too scared to go to the optician. So please please book that appointment! They will probably say the same as what they told me. It's so reassuring to hear others suffer from this and I'm not alone .

Hiya! I have this problem and I suffer with anxiety. Even though I don't show it, I panic about everything. I could get a bump or lump and I assume the worse. I get these floaters all the time and have only become to notice them. SO! I went to the optician and he said my eyes are healthy! Although we may be panic about these things our body reacts in different ways. Floaters can be seen through our anxiety or through tiredness (this is according to the optician). If your floaters move freely and you don't get any flashes, it's probably nothing but it is still a good idea to get it checked out. To be perfectly honest, I've been reassured and I'm still worried! Long life the anxiety sufferers!

Hello, Catherine!

I understand exactly what you are going through. Many people have anxiety issues, and symptoms can get extremely scary and uncomfortable.

Mine started a few months ago, and just when I thought I was free, they came back even more violently. I have had symptoms such as headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheaded feelings, extreme panic, feeling like I am going to die, throat lumps, shaky hands and feet, numbness, eye pressure, a stiff neck, crying a lot, strange tension in my head and ears, bad nausea, and of course, eye floaters.

I am not yet a medical specialist, but I am soon to be. It saddens me that university does not even mention anxiety, and medics will try to cure you for what your symptoms look like, completely ignoring stress. Eye floaters are indeed caused by stress - high levels of cortisol. I had them since I was little, when I was stressed. (By the way, for me personally crying helps a lot, since through tears I release cortisol out.)

Nothing bad will happen. You have to understand that, and it will make your life a lot easier. Many people are feeling what you're feeling and it is terrible. I myself find relief in giving such advice.

It is important that you have all your tests done, then when you know all is fine, you will realize that it's just stress. And it WILL go away, but first we both have to feel these little annoying symptoms. Crush them. Step on them, for your life quality and for your son.

If you feel a psychologist can help, go for it!

There is no shame in feeling this way. You have to realize that nothing will happen, even when you feel like you're about to faint or even worse. You have survived 100% of your toughest moments, and it can ONLY get better from now on. All the best to you and your son! Maria.

how many floaters do you have and were they in both eyes?

Hi Maria,

HOw were you able to overcome all the symptoms? I have some inflammation in the lungs but I also have anxiety and have all the symptoms you listed. Crying makes me feel worse the next day. Im trying to find a way to beat this without meds. I am seeing a psychologist as well. What are the annoying symptoms you say we'll have to go through. Any info will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

For some reason Eye floaters are common with severe anxiety. I have had them when I first developed anxiety symptoms in my 20s. You will not go blind so please don't worry about that. They are harmless , Just annoying. You would want to have your eyes examined if you start to see flashes around the corner of your eyesight. That also happened to me  but everything is OK.

I suggest you do a search on YouTube for guided mindfulness meditation's that really help calm down the body and mind .

also there are meditations that are great such as detachment from overthinking,  and train your mind and body to relax, sleep, relieve anxiety.

they teach you how to manage anxiety and promote peace of mind.

Hi empik1986, can you send me a message. We are around the same age and I am going through the same thing.
