Fatty liver disease

I have been diagnosed with fatty liver disease. My doctor says it has to be kept a look at. Any advice please

Yes, i too have got that.  My GP said that it can be reversed.  I've got an MRI scan on Monday as they also found a cyst in my liver.  I am also diabetic so i'm on a mission now to reverse my diabetes and fatty liver.  I've changed my diet a lot ie i've cut out sugar and i only eat healthy stuff.  I could have had this for years and not known about it which is scary as it can progress and get worse.

Yeah I had mri scan.they said I need to change my diet.its just getting motivated to do it.its the 3rd biggest killer in United states and the UK is not far behind it can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.good for you for making changes.

I have fatty liver the advice I was given was to cut sugar ,salt out of my diet.I weighed 9 1/2"stone but told to lose weight I am now 8st 11lb and feel better for it.I was also advice to get more exercise but with a back and hip pain it's not easy.

I'm staying on a low fat diet.I have never drank alcohol.

Have you had a fibroscan

Yes, i know it can be serious if left but what makes me angry is that nobody would know they have it unless you get scanned so they only come across it by chance - that is scary so am glad i know about it now.

That's so true they are trying at the moment one of the best liver specialist in the country to come up with a simple blood test Witch would show that person needs more investigation. He has been campaigning for years saying it's the only illness that is growing rapidly year on year compare to other illness slightly going down. Let's hope more people are tested x

HI! My 16 year old son was diagnosed with a non alcoholic fatty liver in April after we eventually got an ultra sound on his liver. The scanner person said that with the right diet, weight loss and exercise in a year's time the liver would be clear. We waited for two weeks to see the GP but we're only given a telephone consultation with the same advice! He's about a stone over weight and so he's reduced his calorie intake and fats, salt and sugar. He's feeling much better and has lost half a stone. The shocking thing is that there must be many people with fatty livers and they won't be aware that they are eating themselves (or drinking themselves) into an early grave! We were given no offers of follow up tests etc, all pretty poor.

That's the same I was told and I don't drink alcohol either it sounds like your son is doing all the right things iam sure he will fully recover just needs to keep an eye on it when he is older you would never think someone so young would have the condition but apparently it can effect anyone .best of luck x

Really glad your son is doing so well

Iv found information about fatty liver very poor.my consultant wanted to see me in 2 weeks that was 5 weeks ago.I'm still waiting for scan results.

I am thankful for this site and we need to give each other encuragment.

losing weight is not easy and it must be very difficult for your son, but he seem to be doing very well.

I didn't know anything about fatty liver even some family dr are still learning.

Yes, sugar (and starches) is the culprit.  All those softdrinks, hot chips, bread, pizzas, pastas are killing us.  I have friends who have cut all sugar and starches out of their of their diet and their fatty liver was cured.  I bet you have a high ferritin iron level too. You will be able to tell if your fatty liver is curing by the reduction in your ferritin iron.  However, if you also have a high TS%, you should have a genetic test for Haemochromatosis.

I am Type 2 diabetic as well as recently being diagnosed with fatty liver.  I've changed my diet completely now and have cut sugar right down and i watch my carb intake.  I really want to reverse my diabetes and fatty liver.  I just feel so glad that i know about it.  It is scary that probably a lot of the population are walking around unaware that they have fatty liver.  I am just so surprised (and disappointed) that GP's don't highlight this condition, i'm not sure why, would it be the fact that people would then start asking for screening (ie scanning) and that would therefore be too expensive for the NHS?

I  have a  fatty liver, found through blood tests two years ago for alergies and came back as T2.   I have lost weight, now gone on lower carbs but 13 weeks ago had a tkr and all the meds I think have raised the liver from 160 last Oct to 260 this April.   Going for a scan on 24th of this month.  I don't drink, always eat healthy foods, not a lot of meat, plenty of fruit but didn't exercise that much.  I am 75.

having now to exercise  after the op and now doing 3 x 8 mins on an exercise bike every day hoping that this will help start the liver nos going down.  When diagnosed April 2013 the no was 531....

Does anyone get a slight pain/discomfort from their fatty liver?  I get that under my right rib but not sure if it is related to the fatty liver.  I had an MRI scan last Monday so hopefully once i get the results i will find out whether this slight pain/discomfort may or may not be related.

Go Hazel - you seem to be getting it under control.  Sugary and starchy foods are said to be the culprits.  Eliminate them and you will see fast results.  Fruit can be full of sugar too so take care with them.  Eat some in morning so that you can work them off during the day.

Hi hazel you're doing all the right things.the bike exercise will be great for your heart to xx

did you get the results,I too have these pains and was tod it was gallstones

hello i had my MRI report but there was no mention of the fatty liver as they are really concentrating on my cyst which they are looking at in detail, i have to find out what sort of cyst it is and i am waiting for a blood test now to rule out or confirm whatever it is.  I have been assured though that it is not cancerous which is a relief but because it's a classed as a complex cyst that is what all the investigation is about.  I am due to see a consultant this Friday so hopefully i will know more then but it really is a waiting game in these sort of circumstances.  Thanks for asking anyway, i will keep you updated.

Great new about it not being cancer you must be really relieved.

hope all goes well on Friday x holly

Hi My ultrasound showed a cyst but an MRI then confirmed it as three Focule Nodule Hyperplasmia - these are benign and I am told they will do no follow up scans. Also fatty liver. Unhappy about this - going back to Dr to try to insist on a follow up 12 months scan. The worry of misdiagnosis is driving me insane. Hope all goes well Friday
