Yesterday I accidentally swallowed a piece of meat which was a sausage that I forgot to chew on as I was rushing to finish up my food before my shift ended and continue back to work. But I really regret it though.. I could feel the food stuck inside my esophagus on the right side but I could breathe just fine. I did drink lots of water and milk to help moisten up. Will it eventually dissolve on its own if I keep drinking something to help? I’m honestly scared if my life could be in danger now. My anxiety is just making it worst.
Hi Shanny. Your life is not in danger. You have eaten a bit of sausage and it’s got a bit stuck, that’s all. Your body is a wonderful thing and will sort it out for you even if you do nothing. If you can breathe, you are okay. Your body will dissolve it, it has plenty of chemicals to do that. You do not need to worry. You will be okay.
I know how easy it is to be frightened by this sort of thing happening but try to remember that your anxiety is a natural part of your defense mechanism and is trying to protect you but because it is stuck on ‘high alert’ at the moment it is looking for any and every possible danger, even when there isn’t one!
You are suffering from nervous arousal (anxiety) which can feel very uncomfortable but it will not do you any harm. I have been anxious, on and off, for over thirty years and have thought I was going to die hundreds of times. Not pleasant, but the thing is I’m still here! There is no need to worry, you will be okay.
Thank you Athol for the positive response. I think it might of went down since I have a sore throat today, but it still feels like it could be there. I’m trying to stay calm about it as much as I can since I know anxiety can make it x10 worse than what it really is.
If you have a fear of dying, you need to seek spiritual help. Once you do this your mind will automatically be put at ease.
