Feeling awful 10 days after Iron Infusion. Is it normal?

Hopefully they will all pass overnight. The headache, dizziness and the whole body tingling and feeling hot side effects that I experienced had left me after 5-10 minutes into the infusion, I also developed chest pain half way through the infusion and has been troublesome since my knee pain and extreme fatigue built up day by day, this is "apparently" not normal, so don't let doctors tell you different, I had spoken to the company that makes and distributes the iron, as I stated in my previous comment because of the chest pain they had to fill out an uncommon side effect form to add to their records and to notify my doctor ( no names or other identifying information given to company or doctor(s) ) I was also informed the iron should be starting to work after about 4 days, it has to get into the bone marrow , etc, etc and we should feel the full effect by 10-14 days. I had to go to emergency lastnight as like you I have a job to walk and more frequent chest pains (I do suffer angina) and have spent the last 4 days in bed, it's even an effort to even try and talk. If this is how it makes you feel for a week I don't think I'll be taking my second infusion, this is horrible the way we feel when it's suppose to help us get better with what ever condition is causing our iron depletion.

Hi,

Ferinject was the brand name used in my infusion sad I'm still suffering, was in emergency til well after 2.30am this morning, nothing they could do other than recommend continuing on with my pain relief. CK blood test came back normal, Troponins for once normal again.

I contacted the company about these side effects and they said was I was experiencing was a side effect(s) but uncommon so because of the chest pain he had to fill out a side effect/ adverse reaction form, patients name is with held so no personal information is required and your doctor, in my case my cardiologist  won't know that it was you, for privacy reasons, but I wasn't concerned about that because I have to let him know any way that I had the "uncommon" side effects just as I had to tell my GP.

I'm three days post-iron infusion (with Ferinject) and didn't have any symptoms until last night when the fever, chills, vomiting started. I'm actually feeling much better this morning so hopefully I'm past the worst of it.

Hi,

Both GP and Cardiologist have told me not to go ahead with my second iron infusion, no reasons given as yet, perhaps severe side effects, chest pain has settled down, still very tired and been in bed 5 days straight, still feel extremely tired, I force myself to do something and I'm absolutely buggered after finishing whatever I was doing and have to lie down, Knee joints are still as sore as anything and walking around like an old man, has moved up into the hip joints but that was short lived, *touch wood* . Into day 10 in all of this , who would of thought a necessary / essential  vitamin or whatever it's called would cause so much grief, even if it may be a kind of fake / synthetic material going into our blood stream. Absolutely horrible.

Glad your feeling much better  😊 I’m on day 5 after mine & had quite a lot of headaches & dizziness but turns out I have a bad ear infection 😩 hopefully will start to feel a lot better soon

Oh Jane, Your anemia was a 3. I understand what you say about having to go lay down if you attempt anything. My anemia level was a 4 and I had a blood transfusion in 2016. I still am exhausted and lay down.  Looking back I think I was affected with anemia since 2007 and didn't get a diagnosis until 2016.

Hi there, do you feel any better? I’m a first time patient for iron infusion, my specialist used Ferrinject and I had two vials infused 2 days ago.

I felt horrible during and after the infusion. I felt faint and nauseas during and very weak and dizzy afterwards with horrendous headache. The headaches have eased off but the nausea started up again last night. I have body aches as well and just feel like the life has been sucked out of me. Originally my iron level was 7 and I was diagnosed as anaemic; I’m wondering how long it’s going to take me to get this burst of energy I so desperately need??

Hi there,

Do you feel any better? I’m a first time Ferrinject patient and 2 days in still feeling awful, just wondering how long it takes to recover?

Hi there tori,

How you feeling now? I had my first round of Ferrinject 2 days ago and still feeling nausea, weakness and overall lethargic.  I’m wondering how long it takes to feel normal?

MY iron is now 235 but I still feel the same. Was hoping for the big burst of energy but never got it.

Hi,

That's the same as me unfortunately, never got that energy they said would come 10-14 days after infusion, my iron level has crept up but only just in range apparently.

Hi,

All the symptoms you have mentioned are pretty  well normal except for the body aches, I had a severe reaction to my first iron infusion , I had the muscle aches, joint aches, extreme tiredness, I couldn't muster up the energy to get out of bed for a few days, and chest pain, I was told by my cardiologist to discontinue any further iron infusions. It took me a good 4-5 weeks to recover from this.

After 1 blood transfusion I never did feel any better. Very low energy still. But the trans raised the hemoglobin to normal.

Hi Luba,

How did you end up recovering? I had my first infusion of Ferrinject 3 days ago and still feeling nausea, weak and dizzy. How’s long did it take you to feel normal with more energy?

Hi, I’m in the same boat with my Dr not really giving me answers about how long it will be until I feel normal again. I had my first Ferrinject infusion 3 days ago and still feeling quite nauseous, dizzy and weak. The headaches I had the first day and half afterwards seem to have disappeared though.   I’m taking Maxolon for nausea, and just wondering how long your nausea lasted? I’ve had a horrible time after the infusion and feeling like I will never recover. Thanks for your response, it’s been hard to get answers.

Hi there, I’ve had my first Ferrinject infusion 3 days ago and still feeling weak, dizzy and nauseous. How long before you recovered? Did you regain your energy post your first infusion?

Youre right about this being the only forum...my GP hasn’t much experience in infusions and the nurses expected me to feel better straight away....my specialist said at least 1 week but reading through these forums, some people took months to feel better. sad

Hi,

Here's what was explained to me by Nursing staff and my Doctors, Side effects are minimal, they were wrong on that one for me, well perhaps not wrong, it just took a lot longer for the serious side effects to disappear with me, the nausea, metal taste in mouth and sweating disappeared within 15 minutes of starting infusion, within 10 minutes of starting infusion I got chest pain, as I suffer angina any way my spray under the tongue helped control that.

Everyone says you should feel the full benefits of the iron infusion with in 10-14 days, I didn't get that energy, in fact I was bed ridden for a week, continued chest pains, severe muscle aches and joint aches known as arthralgia, something along that name, quite common in Statins as well.

Due to my severe reaction to the iron infusion my GP told me to stop and seek the advice of my cardiologist, his answer was the same, do not go ahead with any more iron infusions. The only thing the infusion did was bring my iron levels to only just in range.

me too thanks for pos-ting ti helped me x

Is the iron making me this uncomfortable. This morning i feel very nauseas.headache.can not eat.please help.restarted iron again but this is first time it made me sick

How long have you had these side effects after infusion ? My nausea, headache and hot flushes disappeared around 15 minutes through the infusion, although I had lost my appetite for close to a week. since I had some adverse reactions to the iron infusion I was advised by both my GP and cardiologist to cease further iron infusions.
