I was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago, and yes it was very painful and uncomfortable. At first I was misdiagnosed with a bladder infection. But I kept getting worse, ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, fever, chills, so i knew something wasn't right. i was then diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus. they put me on anti-virals (some generic version of valtrex) and after i finished them, i felt like the infection was coming back.
my doctor said i was still healing and put me on the anti-virals again, for ten days. it's been 3 and a half weeks since my initial outbreak, and i'm still not quite right. thankfully the pain is gone, i'm just still uncomfortable. but i do feel like i'm slowly getting better. I just didn't think it would take this long.
i've done a lot of research and apparently the first outbreak is the worse, and usually the more outbreaks you have, the less severe and shorter lasting they are, and as time goes on, the amount of recurrences lessens.
You should not feel bad about having this. When I first found out I had it, I was really concerned too. But it's actually not as bad as people make it out to be. Yes it is painful, and people make it seem like this "bad" disease. but really, it's the same virus that causes cold sores, doesn't matter if you have type 1 or 2, either one can show on the lips, genitals, and even the eyes. it's a virus, it spreads.
They says it's incurable, but all they mean by that is it remains dormant in your body. it lives in the spine. it doesn't mean your going to have recurring outbreaks. it's like the chicken pox. once you have the chicken pox, the virus stays in your body but is also dormant, meaning you may or may not get another outbreak of the chicken pox, or shingles.
I hope this helps. It's not the worse thing in the world. You can live with it, it just sucks sometimes, but there are medications to help when you need them. Your definitely not alone. Many people have this virus, whether it be type 1 or 2, it doesn't matter. Another thing I found interesting is that about 80% of people who have herpes don't even know they have it because they are asymptomatic (no symptoms) or they have very mild symptoms. Well, I hope this helped a bit. You can get through it.
