Feeling nervous

Well it's the big day tommorow for my LTHR, but is it normal to feel so nervous and anxious, not ever had a hospital stay before so dreading the whole experience, guess I just need to man up!

Yes it is normal. Go with the flow, ask as many questions as you need, obey the physio and take your pain meds. Good luck

Probably by the time you read this the THR will be behind you.  I had a THR 16 days ago, and got very nervous the week before surgery.  This is a totally normal occurence for anyone facing surgery.  I am sure you have done fine, and feeling amazing.  My only word of advice to to be easy on yourself as everyone heals differently, and each surgery is different.  You are bound to be sore, and have weakness but that is normal.  Don't expect to go out hiking in 2 weeks, rest and let your body heal.  Hope this helps you!!

Hi Philip,

This is absolutely normal, especially as you've never experienced a hospital stay before.  I had a FRHR almost 2 years ago and I can tell you that I'm so glad I did.  I have no pain what so ever now and I'm back to living my normal life.  My experience while in the hospital was great.  They kept me comfortable and showed me how to get back on my feet, so to speak.  The first month is the hardest, but nothing I wouldn't do again when the time comes for me to get my other hip done.  Try not to worry too much.  Best wishes!

Hi Philip,

I wasn’t looking forward to it at all! I remember going down to theatre and thinking, ‘What am I doing...?’ However it was loads better than I was expecting, just take it steadily, take your meds, do your exercises, rest a lot.

I wish you all the best, Judith

Most of us feel like that if we haven't been through an operation before - I know I did.

As Maggie says, ask questions, obey physio, take pain meds.

Oh and don't ogle the nurses too much eek.

Remember the recovery will be slower than you think it should be - we all get impatient.

Best wishes

Graham

Oh come on Graham.. .. it made it just bearable for me having pretty nursing staff looking after my every need night and day!

All the best Richard

You will be fine Philip I think we all get the nerves before the op . Hope all goes well and your on here telling us you didn’t know why you were so worried. Look forward to being pain free in a few weeks time I’ve had both hips done and felt just like you the second one was a breeze as I knew what was happening good luck for tomorrow x

Philip

Yes most people are nervous but I'm with Richard and Graham. Enjoy what you can of the hospital experience. You will get lots of attention over the next few days. They lose interest a bit when they think you are ready to go home but until then enjoy! It may well hurt a bit at first but for most of us the result is wonderful.

Good luck

Mike

I had my THR on my left hip exactly one week ago , yes I am tired and yes it aches but I am getting around on my crutches I came home on monday ,I live in France the nurse has been coming in every morning to give me an injection to stop thrombosis tomorrow she is doing a blood test a nurse will be in every morning over Easter .I was terrified as my french is not very good it is a misconception to believe they all speak English they are very caring and understand my needs. You will be fine just don't try to run before you can walk ,keep taking your meds and it will pass like a dream. Good luck

It is totally normal to be anxious and nervous. As others have said...enjoy the attention you will get. I had my THR at 10 am on one day..walking that afternoon and after walking and doing the steps for physical therapist the next day I was released to go home..In the hospital bout 30 hrs tops.. Your recovery will go well if you just do exactly what Doctor says and dont rush it....the pain free hip and pain free walking that you will have real soon is worth it all...It is a process and a journey not a destination.. Take your meds just as the doctors say to stay ahead of the pain...Good luck.. You will do great.

If you were not nervous that would be a bit scary.  It’s normal. I was and I had several ops prior. The key is having a great and experienced surgeon, following recovery instructions and do PT. I a while you will forget you even had it

Very normal to feel nervous. I will have my second surgery in less than two weeks and I'm nervous! Last time the doctor gave me two pills - one for the day before and one for the morning of. They certainly helped to take the edge of as I was doing a lot of crying. I will ask for the same thing this time. Good luck!

Hi Philip! I loved my hospital stay - the food was good and everyone takes such good care of you! I know everything will go great for you!

Yes I most certainly think it’s normal to feel anxious! It was my first hospital stay as well. I was in so much pain for so long I was actually looking forward to surgery. That is until the day before & I got a little nervous too. There is some surgery & stitch pain or discomfort but the horrible pain I went to the hospital with was gone! 5 mos post op I’m back to work, still have some stiffness and know with time that will go away and I. getting stronger every day. I am so glad I had the surgery!! Prayers for you for a successful surgery and I’m sure we’ll be seeing you back here soon!

And I would also like to tag onto the others to say listen to your doctor, take your meds as long as you need, call Dr if you have any concerns after you go home & don’t overdo it! Hard to be patient especially if you’re doing so well right away but take your time. Doing so will ensure a better recovery, best of luck in your surgery!

Good luck! Tomorrow is 2 week post RTHR for me (I'm 50), and so far so good. I was kind of freaked out also - you'll be fine :-)

I had my second surgery 6 weeks ago. The anaesthetist told me that those who have never had an operation feel nervous because they don’t know what to expect, while those that have had previous surgery feel nervous because they do know what to expect!

Before my first op someone recommended listening to guided imagery for Surgery with Belleruth Naperstack. I found it helped me to remain calm and the surgeon said the operation went surprisingly well. I did the same thing this time, with the same results. I listened at least once a day for a couple of weeks prior to my op, and also listened in hospital while I was waiting to be taken to theatre. I totally recommend it. The website is called Health Journeys and you can download an mp3 onto a tablet or phone. You have to pay but it isn’t much. There may be similar free ones on YouTube but I felt it was worth the money.

Good luck Philip. If you have not experienced an in patient stay before then you have the right to feel nervous. However form a seasoned pro, just try and relax. I was fine right up till the walk to theatre then i started to worry, but  all was fine., 2 and a half years now since my hip replacement and live life to the full xx

Hi Sue, I was in the same position, I was in so much pain I could not wait for the day. I was just petrified the op would be cancelled. I turned up at 7.15am on the day and the place was like the Marie Celeste. There is no A&E at the hospital which was an old TB hospital and so very scattered. I was with a friend and it took fifteen minutes to actually find someone who luckily happened to be a porter. That also took my mind off things!
