Feeling Your Heartbeat. What's Your Experience?

My most bothersome anxiety symptom is heart palpitations. It beats so fast & i can feel every single beat. It's so scary eventhough I've seen a cardiologist. Only skipped beats were found & i was given the lowest does of propanolol for it but im too scared to take it lol. (Health anxiety). Sometimes it beats so fast i think its going to stop which i know is irrational & its only going to make it worse. I feel as though im putting too much stress on it eventhough im 16. I have nwver had these feelings until i started googling stuff. I'm losing weight, missing school etc. Need advice. How do i stop this? Any tips? It's hard for me to sleep lmao

Hi

What you need to remember is that the more we worry about it the more palpitations we have. Its a vicious circle and one that we have to break ourselves. Our anxiety makes our senses go into overdrive, so our sense of smell, eyesight, hearing etc all becomes stronger. We are also more tuned in to our bodies so we feel notice our heartbeat etc.

I see a counsellor and one of the self help techniques is to do some maths or number puzzle like sudoku. The reason I was told was that the part of your brain that makes you anxious and the part of the brain that you use when doing number puzzles.or maths or even counting down in 3's from 300, those two sidesnof your brain cant work at the same time. So therefore in theory if your doing.numbers you cant be anxious. Try it and see if it works. Its not a cure for anxiety, just a copy mechanism. See your doctor about your anxiety and see if you can access counselling. You may be too young for medication yet. Take care and have a nice Christmas x

Hi Jess, my anxiety spiralled from becoming obsessed with my heart, I suffer from heart palpitations and skipped beats. Anyways I was scared of taking propranolol but 4 months later I'm still on them and it takes a lot of weight and thought away from my heart, it has stopped my skipped beats...don't be scared of taking them you are on a very low dose I'm on 40mg twice a day and to be honest I wish I took them sooner, Maybe it would of taken all my obsessed thoughts away from my heart. Please give them ago...what's the worst thing that will happen? Propranolol take all the anxious feelings away. Merry Christmas x

I recommend the propanolol, it’s done wonders for myself. I have similar to you, when I get anxious my heart rate and blood pressure shoot up, this makes me nauseous, not want to eat and I get the shakes. I was recently given propanolol ontop of my anxiety meds and they have been amazing.

Don’t be scared to try them, just get your blood pressure checked every month.

Deep breathing also helps calm, breath in through your nose for 4 seconds and out through your mouth for 7 seconds. Good luck!

Our heart beats faster/slower depending on what we are doing. When we run the heart will beat faster. In bed before sleep, you may feel the heartbeat in your ears, this is normal, the heart rate will rise when you lye down then restore itself for sleep, it will do the same thing when you get up in the mornig time because the heart takes a load as you lift yourself up from rest.

Generally the heart is in quite good condition if you can feel the beat. Sometimes if we are stressed the heart beat will increase, Flight or fight.

Thankyou so much for your advice. I appreciate it. I will try my best to remember it when i feel anxious. God bless you 💜

Thankyou so much. My mother has been begging me to take my xanax & propanolol. I'm afraid of allergic reactions lol eventhough i have no experience with allerica reactions. My irrational thoughts continuously run through my head & i can't control them .it's really hard lol
