Fellow smokers! Indigestion and Smoking?

I especially want help from fellow smokers as i'm sure they're more likely to sympathise etc.

Does smoking cause or increase wind/indigestion?

I have really bad indigestion and wind as well as other bowel related problems, i am going to a professional in a month or so- so i don't need any advice on what it may be, i just want to know if smoking is worsening my symptoms? and any help or advice you can offer me.

PLEASE don't say 'stop smoking' if it was that simple i would have by now, so just some helpful advice other than that please.

Hi,

I am not saying yes or no, but from own experience and what I have been through it could have caused a major problem I had, and I nearly died twice in 2 days. It was caused by my instestines turning gangrene, which they assumed was caused by the smoking. I was on 40 cigs a day, and tried many times to give up, and failed everytime. In the past I had cancer, and I still carried on smoking!!!

But smoking can harm the bowel, I know that part, as for flatulence it could be.

Regards,

Les.

This, I think does have a lot to do with the amount of smoking.

Smoking in little doses, does have a relaxing effect.

Smoking a lot can create stress.

Becouse of stress, some people do have the habit to eat inregular or faster.

This eating pattern, for sure could be related to the increased symptoms.

Do inform your Professional about it and ask him/her for an opinion.

Good luck,

Escar, 30+ ciggy's a day

BTW, you mentioned "other bowel related problems", the only other thing I used to suffer from badly was "Irritable Bowel Syndrome", so I was on meds for that.

I wouldn't say give up to anyone, I know how hard it is - for me I had no choice being bed-ridden for nearly 4 weeks! That's the only way I gave up, stuck in a dam hospital.

Les.

Hi Em, smoking can cause and exacerbate gastic ulceration. Im the last person to preach about giving up, took me 30 years to finally kick it, even though I knew the harm it was causing me. Hope youre taking antacids etc Also, maybe try not to have your cigs on an empty stomach as I think they can increase gastric acid production. Good luck.

A definite YES! More stomach ulcers and worse reflux - oesophagitis. There are lots of reasons to try and give up. Have you ever had spirometry - a lung function test done by primary care in the UK to see what if any damage you have done? They can do LUng Age as a simple way of understanding the results.

Wow thank you for your advice and experience les, sounds awful.

I assume i might have IBS, although i'm waiting on a gastroenterologist to clear that up for me.

It is extremely hard to give up, thank you for sympathising! It's only recently that as i am smoking i feel a sort of brick in my chest like i need to burb or something. its awful

thank you for your help

Thank you for replying.

I definetly do eat fast, i never thought this could be a result of smoking though.

best wishes x

I know smoking is awful, but regardless i still do it. Due to what i'm suffering at the moment i have managed to cut down a little, and stopping my morning smoke before breakfast, although it hasn't made a noticable impact.

Thank you debbie x
