Femoral Palsy from THR

This is an amazing support group and I have been enriched reading your comments.

But....I need to know if there is anyone out there in THR land that has suffered a femoral nerve palsy from your THR and had five blood transfusions to boot....during and for two weeks after the surgery?

Im looking for statistics now. I personally can't find any of these complications...especially on an otherwise healthy patient going into surgery.

Please shout out if you can relate to this or know of someone who has suffered permanent femoral nerve damage from THR!!

THX

Hi, my femoral nerve was damaged when my THR slipped out after only 3 days. No fall, just during v gentle exercise in bed with leg elevated on pillows. Anyway, the damage isn't permanent so not sure how relevant this is to you. After 5 months I could walk without crutches. But v carefully. After 13 months I can climb up stairs without using my arms - just. But inside of leg still Numb. Nerve pain manageable with minimum Ganapentin. Working hard to rebuild my quads and VMO but it's hard without physio. That came to an end after 4 months. Have not met other people with femoral nerve damage. Seems to be rare?

No info for you. I am so sorry that you may have experienced this.

Good luck.

Yes, it's extremely rare. Mine was damaged during surgery, plus 5 blood transfusions all up for two weeks after surgery. I have little feeling in 3/4 of my THR leg...am as numb now- 3 years hence, as I was when I woke up from surgery. There are really no treatment protocols for this. My gait it very abnormal. I rely on a cane, walls, for balance. My other hip is now suffering, but with permanent paralysis, I don't want to opt for another THR. And I'm in constant pain helped some by pain management medications. Thanks for your input. Where do you hail from? I'm in the US and am now 73. Aging exacerbates the mess!!!

UK. So this is why my surgeon was so relieved when he finally felt some muscle movement and let me leave hospital. I'm so sorry for you. It's all so unfair and random. I'm 54.

I also seriously need a TKR on the other leg and am on the waiting list but don't want the same hospital. Just can't trust them any more. But GP won't refer me to another. Cannot afford to go private. Damaging the femoral nerve does not help the bank balance of the self employed.

Is there absolutely nothing they can do for you? People told me so many stories at the beginning, about nerve transplants etc, but all absolute rubbish - as far as I can tell. Or not?
