Femur fracture

I’m 47 years old and had a fall 5 months ago and broke my hip bone while at work. it was repaired with 3 cannulated hip scews on the same day. I also have 1.3 cm of leg length discrepancy due to the op. I had 3 months of no weigh bearing as an xray showed it got a bit dislocated. i started physio after approx 3 and a half months with light exercises.Last week i had another follow up and x rays were ok this time and doctor said that i should start using one crutch. I did with the help of my therapist and am quite ok, not much pain only some discomfort while putting pressure o the injured leg. I have only one problem, its that when I stand up after few minutes of sitting i cant walk without limping. I have to make extra force the first few steps I take and be very attentive , then it is ok, i walk properly afterwards. has someone experienced the same things pls?

hi. I’ve had a RTHR in may of this year so not like your op. but often find if sat too long the joints stiff and limp at first. it’s always worse in the morning after being in bed. my information booklet for the OP says this is normal and esp if it resolves with walking.
best wishes for your continued recovery. if you’re like me I’m glad it’s the summer lots of nice walks. dont know how I’d have done in the winter

Hi Josianne,

After my hip op, I had lower back pain, walked bent over and limped for a few months. When I returned to pilates it stopped the lower back pain and the limp goes, it can take time just make an effort to walk heel to toe, it really helps.

Hi. Yes,I had the same op. Now post op 4.5 mths. I was only 6 wks with partial weight bearing. Had a zimmer frame with no wheels for two months than traded up for a walker with wheels for 8 wks plus physio at hospital 1 hr a wk with exercises at home. Im now able to walk around unaided around the house for the last 6 wks, although I use a walking stick when out and about for security. And yes even now when I wake up,I cant just spring out of bed like I used too.I have to stand up and steady myself before I take a few steps. Going up and downstairs one stair at a time, working on doing it normally, but I find it pulls on the injured leg too much. It all takes time I know it can get frustrating at times. Have been able to stand in the bath under my shower now without getting too anxious about falling etc. Good luck.
