Few weeks to go - worried about UTI

Due to have my hip op on Dec 4. I frequently have urine infections and have just been to doc today and have antibiotics. I'm anxious that if I have an infection nearer the op they might cancel?

You have a month to get better, I'm sure they would cancel the surgery. Take your meds and rest...Take care

Thanks. I'm just a bit panicky at the moment! Middle daughter ( 3 children) has lost her job. Youngest daughter has just had a second baby and things not going well. Feeling stressed. I'm sure it'll all be ok.

Your local Dr GP should contact the registrar at the hospital and ask if he needs to give you medication as a preventive measure before your surgery. They should be able to work together, I know they did for me just before my surgery as I had just had a blood clot in my leg, they had to cancel my first booking for surgery, and re-schedule for a later date, with correct medication for me, and that was a problem for the hospital as the medication I was given by GP with a vascular specialist consultation wasn't on the recommended list of the hospital.  Oh what a fuss that caused initially, interesting that after my surgery the drug the hospital was kicking up such a fuss over was given to me as an anti-clotting medication. Wonder if GP had a written opinion from vascular specialist, and had forwarded that opinion to the hospital registrar's, I am on a very nasty combination of drugs, for intractable arthiritis, and mixing with other medications have to be considered very carefully.  I am very aware of the dangers to myself and monitor what I am being given closely.

dear abby -

I think lyn is right - are you on anti-biotics because you have an UTI right now? the infection should be cleared and this is checked with urine test ..

interestingly enough, I had an UTI when I was discharged and just got home ..

I am so sorry to hear about our daughters ... of course you are worried and feel that things are not going well ...

just come back here and share whatever you feel okay ?

know that you are not alone !

big warm hug

renee

Thanks, Renee - yes, on antibiotics because of UTI, from today. It should obviously be clear by pre-op and I guess if not they'll give me more antibiotics then, before the op. It just all got on top of me today, you know? Thanks

Hi abby,

Try to stay calm - easier said than done with alll that is going on at the moment.

As others have said, be aware that you need to get this infection cleared up before your op. Keep a close eye on it and go back to GP if there is no improvement by next week. Good job you are getting it sorted in good time.

See if your regular doctor will prescribe UTI medication for you to take prophylactically before your surgery. That's what I did.  Make sure your surgeon knows that you are doing it.  He doesn't want you to have a UTI, either.

Thank you. Yes I'd planned on going back if not cleared in a week. I might phone hosp next week / talk to them

Thanks Linda - yes I think I'll phone surgeon / hosp next week

Hi Abby,

This is exactly what happened to me.They suspected a water infection and sent me home after waiting all day and I had to wait another 4 weeks for my op. Make sure that you're clear before your op date! Good luck!

Oh thanks Patricia - I'm going to finish these antibiotics then keep going back to GP to make sure it's gone! Drinking water by the gallon!

and cranberry juice !

(P.S. note to self : buy cranberry juice)
