Fibroid extending to Douglas Sac

Not sure quite what direction to go in now...Ultrasound picked up 6cm Fibroid extending to Douglas Sac... further consultation with two independent gyneas both arrived at same conclusion...to wait since no immediate urgency to remove -.only symptoms are discomfort in anus....recently had colonoscopy to check that part of my anatomy too,,One polyp removed..suggestion to go back to check in 5 years..

Am wondering perhaps if coupled with mild internal haemarroids maybe the fibroid which is close to rectum may account for this sensation... bit like having knickers caught in one bottom. !

Anyone else out there with fibroid close to rectum with similar discomfort ..

I think it depends on your age.  If you are close to the menopause your fibroid will shrink eventually.  But my fibroid grew beyond 6cm in the intervening years and I ended up with a rectocele and intusseption as well as a large fibroid.  With hingdsight I would have gone for surgery (myomectomy or one of the new techniques) or embolisation at that point.  In fact I did try to get it embolised but my GP refused.

Thanks cathy forgot to mention am 66.....

So unless the fibroid is growing there's no cause for concern.  Unless you would like it removed for the other pesky problems it's causing . . .

anna

can i ask you 2 questions.

did you have fibroids earlier on in life that shrunk and started growth again.

if so, is that a consequence of taking HRT do you think?

my other question is= was your colonoscopy very painful seeing as you have a mass (fibroid) in that area.?

i ask because i am your age and have fibroids that feel slightly less painful than 3 years ago.

this leads me to believe that theHRT i was taking is responsible for 'the second awakening'

what do you think.? how long have you had these symptoms?

Hi chica....Back in 1998 when I lived in England an ultra sound picked up 'at least 2 fibroids arising from posterior uterus-the largest measuring 63x44x49. I did not want a hysterectomy and decided to try various alternative -spiritual healing and affirmations and a visit to a pschic surgeon...who 'removed one of the fibroids. After that I felt things had settled down. Relocating to France -I did not follow up with any routine checks for many years ! That is until Dec 2014 when a routine Ultrasound picked up a fibroid by Douglas sac...It was decided that a review in 3 months would be advisable since I had  no medical history for them to persue. I have since obtained my records fr England-and it appears this may well be an old fibroid that has been there for some time. I have never taken HRT ...incidentally.  In France it is customary to administer a light anaesthetic for the procedure.. so I did not feel any discomfort during the colonoscopie . The gynae has adopted the watchful waiting attitude since the symptoms presenting are considered mild...the strange sensation of pressure/discomfort in back passage does seem to vary from time to time-I only became aware of these 'symptoms' back in dec/jan 2014/2015. (hence the colonoscopie)..I go back for a check up March 2016 -I am trying acupuncture in the hope of reducing/shrinking the fibroid. The symptoms are puzzling and my doctor is reviewing the present 'impasse' by talking to the gynae and gastro with view to arranging a scan (poss MRI or CT) hopefully an MRI. Hopefully this answers your question...You refer to a second awakening-would you be comfortable expanding on this ? I have not really been too keen on HRT though I have many friends who opted for this when they were ging thru the menopause..

All the best

hi anna,

when i was 42 my fibroids grew and i bled so i was diagnosed to have a hysterectomy.

by the time the appointment came through (4 months) i was ok so i am still intact.

now at 67 i have pain in my pelvic area which i think is due to fibroids growing again and i blame 12 years taking HRT.

thats what i meant by 2nd awakening.!

i'm in spain and to be honest going to specialist appointments are a nightmare as i cant keep up with their rapid speech and the translaters

sometimes arent very good.

i've had a MRI privately which points out i have fibroids but i dont know their location as i cant get anyone to study the CD which comes with the report.

i'm afraid i have'nt had much joy with spanish gynnos.

Thank you Chica..for clarifying...so after 4 months of waiting for appointment you felt things had settled down then....a bit like me really I too decided against hysterectomy and followed a different route.

So now I am 66 and this might also be viewed as a bit of a 'second awakening '........I sympathise with your having to deal with the language -I too have difficulty following the terminology...!! I might take a good friend with me next time as translator.

Is it very expensive to have private MRI scan-it does seem a bit strange though being given a CD /report and no specialist to clarify the details-I thought that would be included in the cost!

I assume you have presented the CD/Report of MRI scan when you attended the specialist appointments-did they not investigate the details ?

the health service specialists get their knickers in a twist if you do anything private here.

they have had their salaries cut and their hours lengthened so they dont seem to make much of an effort for ex pats.

there was always an excuse why they couldnt read my CD.

the MRI clinic is exactly the same one they use.

it wasnt expensive.

130 euros for specific area.

after having at least 7 different health service male gynnos prodding me  and telling me my 'myomas' had calcified and all was well, i went to a private gynno.

she said i had a large mass and needed a hysterectomy.

at that point my alarm bells rang. do you know what i mean.

i've also been to other health service depts. digestivo, urology, internal medicine . had all their tests and still no joy.

i'm hoping like you that my beasties will right themselves.

take care
