Finally have been for a swim!

So, we booked a night away to see a show and the hotel had a leisure centre. It was so fabulous to swim, albeit getting in and out of the pool was a bit tricky! Turns out I can do breast stroke as well as before! ( and endorsed by physio). And I did quite a lot of the physio exercises too. The Jacuzzi definitely helped the tender area over my surgical site area as well! I did forget I'm not quite 'normal' though. The chairs at dinner were really uncomfortable....and it was a long dinner! And in hindsight I should have booked a room with easy access bathroom as I was fine getting into the shower - over - bath combo, but I couldn't get out!! And finally, did a comedy Bambi type walk across the ice rink carpark to come home!

How many weeks out are you from surgery?  I have a hot tub and want to get in but I am only close to 5 weeks out and am not sure about getting in and out yet.

Well Done Jools!! I had hydrotherapy when I had my LTHR done over 2 years ago. It was half hour sessions at the hospital for 12 weeks, I loved every minute of it and I can't swim I think this did me more good than the physio, as I felt so good afterwards xx

Well done Jools. It’s great to be able to swim isn’t it? I have only been able to do breaststroke with confidence for the last 3 weeks (I’m now week 10) but today did 30 lengths in 30 minutes and could probably have done a bit more but had just done an hour of Piates before getting in the pool. The Jacuzzi really does help too, I think it boosts circulation which aids the healing.

All the best

Ann

I’ve been using the pool and jacuzzi at my health club since week 5 but they are easy to get in and out of. It’s lovely to exercise in water.

Cheers

Ann

Hi there,

I'm 12 weeks tomorrow, posterior LTHR. Not too bad a recovery, but my wound leaked  for some time, and I probably wasn't OK to swim until at least week 6/7. It's taken me that long to get to a pool with one thing and another! It felt so good, and that the exercises I did seemed more efficient than the ones you do at home. I can't wait to go again, although the challenge of getting from the pool back across the ice rink car park, up enormous steps and in bitter cold was horrible! Where I normally go is a nice pool with sauna, steam and Jacuzzi thrown in and not as far away!

Hi Ann,

I can't believe how well you are doing, that's amazing. I didn't go out for four days after my terrifying icy walks with the dog!

Now.....trying to shave my legs in order to go swimming....ouch! That wasn't something to be repeated in a hurry! It's a good job I'm fair skinned and only do it once in a blue moon!

And I did look odd coming out of the changing rooms after our swim with no sock and an undone boot as I am still using my sock - aid and grabber to help dressing! I have to think very carefully what I'm going to wear and whether I will need to get it on and off when I'm by myself! But that's OK, as I have hope now that I will put my own sock / do my shoelace one day

Jools

Great that you are now swimming. I tried when I was on crutches after my first stage as the physio thought it would be good for me. It was nice in the pool but the wet tiles around the pool and in the changing rooms worried me.

The Jacuzzi must have been really nice

Mike

Hahaha, yes I struggled shaving my legs (achieved a moth eaten effect) and I noticed today while doing my Pilates class I badly need to sort out my unevenly cut toe nails. I'm so glamorous! The Pilates is helping with stretching so I'm better at reaching down to pull on socks now. I was taking my sock contraption and long handled shoe horn to the gym at first. Also my walking stick but I don't need any of those anymore thank goodness. I still use the walking stick if it's icy. Keep going with the exercise. It's amazing how fast everything starts to improve if you keep at it

cheers

Ann

Swimming is great....pleased it all went well!

Hi Mike,

That's one of the reasons it has taken so long to get to the pool as I didn't have a willing companion! I did wonder if those little rubber socks we had to wear swimming years ago when you had a verrucae might do the job and give you some grip on the tiles? You would look a bit funny but it would give you more confidence maybe? The Jacuzzi was lush and they should put it on prescription for all hippies!
