First session of cognitive behaviour therapy

It was fab, now I know why I get the symptoms I get and how I can reduce them, ie gentle relaxed breathing. I can't wait for my next session

Who else has tried this?

I have tried and found it garbage. Different things work for different people though, and totally depends on each person's issues

I bet you can't wait, I feel that knowledge is power, I now know why I feel the way I do which is a good start, hope yours goes well

i think it can be very helpful because it helps tackle your root cause of anxiety. You have to know your root issue and challenge it cognitively. I personally have to be persisent with it and con my own brain into believing what im challenging. It eases my anxiety if Im patient enough. I think this is way better than traditional talk therapy unless they know how to resolve the root issue. Ive been to a few talk therapist that werent theraputic at all, total waste of time and money.

I've tried it – I had sessions for a year or so when I suffered from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. I know what my root issues are so that's not an issue, but I found it a tremendous help in understanding the link between brain and body, and it enabled me to deal with and eventually overcome panic attacks. Still got the anxiety though!

hey my experience is similar with cbt as well, im still symptomatic (not nearly as bad). i heard that oncethe body becomes symptomatic, it can take a while for the body to heal itself. i think the hardest part is staying anxious free.

I'm on the fence about trying it, does it work well for you?

It won't do any harm,it just isnt effective for everyone, in truth it rarely is helpful. But does no harm to try

I kow loads who have tried it and nice guidelines recommend it and say it is an effective treatment.

Those who have tried it say it gives you ways to cope and think differently, although you do have to be open about your problems ad be in the right frame of mind otherwise it wouldn't work. It aso takes you out of your comfort zone and encourages you to face the anxiety rather than let it hold you back so some don't like it for that reason either and they struggle with that part too

Anxiety is too broad a problem to say one treatment works,it can work for some forms of anxiety and be effective for those. For every person who says it works,you'll fnd more who say it doesn't. It really depends on a lot of thing

And one of the things it depends on is you putting as much work into it as the therapist. You really have to try... you get out of it what you put in!

Yes that's true of all therapy. Remember CBT is all about distraction in essence. It's learning ways to do things differently, it doesn't claim to resolve issues. That's fine for some people,but others have issues which need to be resolved before they can move on, for those people CBT is thouraghly useless and can actually be quite damaging. That's why there is no one size fits all approach

Yes fact based, information on types of therapy can be found online and the goals and mechanisms of each can be found. Purposes of each type of therapy are not the same, they deal with different things with different levels of efficacy

But I don't think that saying that cognitive behaviour therapy doesn't work for most people is fair, it does work for many. However you should have an initial assessment prior to having any treatment to find if it could work for you and I think that is where the key lies. Saying that it probably wouldn't work could put someone in the wrong frame of mind and reduce the chance of it working. I understand that there are other treatment options that could work better for many people but this is to be discussed with a professional and people should not be put of their chosen treatment before they have even started it.
