Just wondered if you could all tell me what your first symptom was which made you think some thing was not at all right, before seeing your doctor mine was lower abdominal cramps nothing else.
Hi Denise, mine was also pain closely followed by blood on wiping. Still get pains but think it is IBS more than the UC x
My first symptom was upper right abdominal pain. Small area few cm at most, felt like a gripping pain on a scale of 1 to 10 it went from a 1 to a 9 in a couple of hours and stayed at a 9 for about 3-4 hours then subsided in about 30 mins. Not a clue what actually caused it. I'd say it has improved or I just know how to mange it. Still none the wisert even though I've had most of my adult life.
My first symptom was very occasional diahorrea - nothing that caused me particular concern as it was so infrequent. Over a period of 6 months the frequency increased coupled with a fairly constant nagging pain, almost like a "stitch", usually in my left side just below my hip but towards the middle of tummy. Occasionally I had a similar pain on the right side. Over the following 4 or months the diahorrea became very frequent, with an urgent need to get to the loo, but also a feeling that my bowels were never fully emptied. It reached the point where , if I needed to go out I wouldn't eat, and I would only eat if I was at home. That was drove me to the GP, which resulted in loads of tests, a colonoscopy and an eventual diagnosis of IBS. It was probably a year between the first, very early symptoms and the diagnosis of IBS. About the time my symptoms started I had been given a different medication for high blood pressure and I am convinced that was what started the whole thing off. If not, it was a remarkable coincidence. It's now 4 months since I was diagnosed and advised to adopt the Low FODMAP diet. I have to say it has been brilliant and I no longer have pain- I do still get the odd flare up but they are usually short lived.
MY FIRST SYMPTOMS:
Happened to me about 1998. I had daily feelings of a very sour stomach which motivated me to go see a Doctor. The Doctor attributed it to an influx of acid and prescribed Prilosec.
However my sour stomach feelings would come & go. To make a long story short - after years of stomach troubles, I then began to have Bowel Movement problems which became full blown IBS which comes and goes. A terrible embarrassing problem.
THE POSSIBLE CAUSE:
Just prior to my sour stomach problems I had been drinking liters of Diet Soda for a very long time. Trying not to put on weight or to lose weight. I have concluded that the lining in my stomach was severely damaged BECAUSE OF DIET SODA. TOO MUCH ACID.
I came to this conclusion many years later. While it was happening I never put two & two together. I firmly believe Diet Soda destroyed my stomach.
I hope this tidbit of info may possibly help you.

One Sunday I woke I was lying in bed with my beautiful partner and started to get what I would later learn to be abdominal cramp. I then proceeded to monopolise the loo for the next 2 hours before crawling back into bed and sleeping until gone midday. This pattern then started to repeat. No idea where it came from or why it chose me, it was not there one day but it most definitely was the next.
A bizarre story. I am sure you will agree.
I had alternating constipation and some diarrhea, no real pain, and my wonderful MD of many years ago dx me as having IBS. It's gotten so much worse over the years, seems I frequentlky don't empty, and oozing can be continual some days. Does anyone else have this?
Mine was constant diarohea for three and half months changed my diet and cut out bread bowels still not right but still get occasional diarohea and constipation some days i dont eat now to help my stomach recover still dont know what it is
My only symptom was dull pain in the lower right abdominal area:
I have similar symptoms
