Five days after op

Hello dear friends...I am here to tell you all about my operation: I had spinal anesthetic and light drug to put me under in seconds  ( I didn't want to hear any noise or see anything) I was asleep in seconds and I woke up with lovely fresh air (oxigen) and kind voice of a nurse calling me back to the land of living. No pain for hours because the anestetic was still doing its job. Once in my hospital bed I was given tea and biscuits, and a little pot full of multicoloured pills...(I hate to take unknown medicines  but I had to...) My blood pressure, temperature and heart beat were monitored every hour, and my blood pressure was very, very low...I felt sick and I actually vomited a few times...I had to use a bed pan ( dreadful experience). The following day I had phisioterapy , that is I managed to get out of bed and stand on my new hip , walk a few steps with a zimmer frame...no pain at all!!!! In the afternoon , followed all the way by a nurse, I managed to go to the toilet by myself! Sleep came easily because of very strong pain killer (morphine). We had special electrical slippers which were massaging the sole of our feet all the time, to avoid blood clots. Now at home  I am taking codeine+ipobrufen every 6 hours, aspirine every morning. I have a list of exercises to do many times through the day

No special socks, no injections on tummy...

I feel weak and sleepy but I am improving all the time, my husband is with me and he is like my slave in Roman times...quite amazing!

Please ask me anything you want to know about this experience, so far I am very pleased with everything.

Best wishes to all of you

Ella

Hi Ella. I'm so pleased everything is going so well for you. Do you know if your hip was cemented or un-cemented? I was meant to have my op the day after yours but mine was cancelled yet again.

oh joanne , that is awful - did they give you another date ? hang in there, girl - warm hug

My hip is cemented, this is rutinely done if you are over 60.

I think it's metal on ceramic but I am not sure.

I am so sorry you are still waiting...Have they given you a new date?

All the best

Ella

Hi Ella ......so good to hear you are doing well ... just get your strenght back and you willo be up and roaring ... I have no questions at the moment - The bedpan is quite something right - I needed  it, I don't remember, a lot of times - needed to go almost every hour - especially right ater surgery and the first night - also passed out on the second day while Physical Therapist had me up and walking -

you lucky girl, no injections ... and a doting husband - take it easy for now .. warm hug

Great that everythng is going well Ella. Hope you continue to do well! Make the most of being waited on!

Hi Renee...I nearly passed out myself while walking with the Phisiotherapist, the zimmer frame was quite strong and I managed to crawl back to bed...The beds were very nice, you could change the position at the touch of a button, and it was soft and very clean...

Big hugs to you

Ella

It varies from surgeon to surgeon. I am 67, and made a point of asking, mine is uncemented. Comment from surgeon, I do it that way if at all possible, age is not the only defining factor. So far, 8 weeks, all OK

Best of luck Ella hope it goes as fast for you as mine has.

Third week for me now, I still need Tramadols two at a time but that is for my left unoperated leg, and no need for the toilet riser this week, seeing the Surgeon about the left one on 23 June.

My advice for speedy recovery is the pointing excersises and bum clenchers, and pushing the leg down into the bed with the toes pointing upwards, I did that 3 times an hour for 5 to 10 reps, and got up every two hours for a walk about the ward on the crutches.

Kindest regards as always  Ian.

Ella you are so lucky that you can take ibuprofen I am not allowed these because I am diabetic and asthmatic I don't sleep well tonight so I am trying a mild sleeping tablet. I tried it last still woke up so going to stop having a drink after 8pm have the tablet at 10pm and go to bed hour later. I still have to have the occasional pain killer cocodamol especially first thing.

Thank you Renee

No new date. When the waiting list office rang last Monday evening the lady said she would ring me in the next couple of days with a date. I rang on Thursday to see what was happening & she said she was just waiting to hear from her manager & will be in touch.

No new date as yet. My surgeon told me he was going to use cement on mine and I'm 44. I'm going to get referred to a different hospital I think. It doesn't sound right to me. He didn't explain nothing at all, he just said cement because I thought of building a house when he said it. I knew nothing about hips at that stage lol.

Great to hear positive stuff.

my op is scheduled fpr June 29th.

Hi Ella,

Well done, the worst is over now. I hope you make a speedy recovery!

Ella I'm just delighted to hear how ur getting on so quickly after ur op. I'd rather be asleep too as I watched a THR op on YouTube & the sounds effects kept me awake for nights. The more positive feedback I'm getting is making me feel more comfortable about it. Apparently the hip pain is gone immediately. If so I can't wait. 😘

Hi Maggie

I am having uncemented - are there any weight bearing or other restrictions as I believe bone has to grow round it?

Hi Joanne

Sorry to hear of your cancellations

i was cancelled on day of op 3 weeks ago but have new date 10th june

It's soul destroying isn't it

which hospital are you at?

I think the reason that they are referring you to a different hospital is because you may get in quicker

Hi Pansycat

Yes it is. You get everything prepared like work, husbands work, house, washing, shopping and you get yourself all psyched up and then the big let down.

I'm at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincs.

I'll keep my fingers firmly crossed for you on the 10th.

I've read your posts about the Superpath, are you at Rugby hospital?

Hi Marilyn

The hospital isn't referring me, I think I'm going to go to docs and get referred myself.
