THR in France, some kind of a resin joint. Had surgery on April 30, 2014.
Just before 4 weeks in a matter of days I made a rapid recovery. Like real fast. through weekk 3 I was on Codine between 3 x day 2 @ 25mg to 1 at night 25 meg. I Really needed them and I took them. But when I no longer needed themmy body told me. I couldn't walk more than 20 meters, and was weak and clammy. Quit the codeine and wok up a new woman.
Yesteday I went to 2 Banks, the Boulangerie, and the grocery store. I drove myself and made three trips going up stairs to bring in my groceries. I then slept eight blessed hours with out waking up, and am in fine shape today. I need no crutches at all. Honeslty I can't believe it, like the snap of my fingers how quick that healing took place. I mean for 3 weeks I really wasn't that great at ALL. I guess we all really have to just wait it out and let the body heal.
I can't wait to no longer have any restrictions on sleeping on my operated side. I used to feel bad about people who would write in all the fabulous things they did a week after surgery and I was doing nothing but laying in bed or laying on the sofa and taking pain pills. Tonight I even prepared dinner for the first time since my surgery. Honeslty its' like a miracle how quickly that healing happened after week 3. I'm ag 60 BTW.
My hip is strong and supports me just fine. I took 2 napraxon this morning an that is it. I have still the slightest tenderness on the iliopsoas tehdon, but that seems likre it is healing up just fine on it's own also. For anyone experiencing Groin Pain after THR be sure and search this forum for topics in it. If you have Groin Pain you most likely have iliopsoas tendonitis and you need to REST not Exercize that tendon so it will heal.
All is well, I feel great.
So glad its all so much better...even now..15 weeks I think..I can still see little improvements...absolutely no pain sleeping on either side, up and down stairs almost normally ...just a bit of backache after walking or standing for too long....almost forget most of the time!! (and I'm 63 BTW......but still working full time!)
jodie.. did they give you things like grabbers and raised toilet seat, they seem to do that in the uk.
You certainly sound great, well done, hope I am as quick, hope things carry on to improve, did you go to rehab, I am going for 3 weeks....
I got nothing in France. No Grabbers, I used a long handled kitchen tongs.
The raised toilet seat my husband had to buy and what a rip off, I think hr paid like 50 Euros.
But I can't compain, I'm healing up just fine. I eben told the pysical therapist today to not come back. Physical therapy 3 times a week was simply he gave me a leg massage, and the last 2 times he has been massaging my incision. He would give me massages and then support my leg while he manipulated it. I don't need him any more.
My calves are a little sore from all that walking yesterday but not painfully sore. I took the physical therapists advice when he said if an exercize hurts don't do it. Wait and your body will heal, then you can handle it. I only went about one year from when my hip became really bad until I had the surgery. I suffreed more from tendonosis in my legs than I did from my hip to be honeest with you.
Basically I laid aound for 3 weeks hardly exercized at all, then one ay felt pretty good and ditcghed the walker for 2 crutches. After two days on 2 crutches went to one crutch, and and 2 days later no crutches. I don't have an odd gait at all. I concentrate on keeping my back straight and consciously do not hunch over, and I concentrate onn walking heel then toe and that is it. I can hardly believe it myself, In four weeks with no exercizing (practically) I'm walking just fine. Hey maybe ther really was something in those thrice weekly leg massages?
I do think that people with exixting back conditions have a harder time, but thankfully I didn't have that issue.
Very surprised to hear something so positive. Maybe you were lucky to have surgery in France. 3 days a week physio!! I got two 5 mn sessions! Suffering 8 weeks I bought 400£ massager which reduced my swelling immediately so prob those manual massages did lots of good.
also interested In The resin prosthesis.... Can you say more. I'll look it up anyway. I swam first time 6 months and played tennis in great pain so 100mg tramadol which I hate taking. Also being rangy thin think the size was a bit out and it a bit "proud". You are also fortunate to stand erect. It takes me a huge conscious effort and I feel hunched. Resin will be less toxic too. My scar responded to aloe Vera but is very florid still and tender and feels as though underlying tissue is stressed.
Groin pain btw helped by lying floor and pushing legs against wall in a "V" shape deep breathing and relax bit more each day. Breast stroke also helped.
we are all so different as are the surgeons and the prostheses as well as state of mind at the time. If you have life event stresses I would urge postponing surgery. Also be prepared to lose weight if you are skinny.
vive la france!
Wow, I remember posting a reply just after you were out of surgery and clearly suffering!! It does my heart good to hear such a positive outcome and that you are now progressing so fast. I think your story will give many others the strength to push through any pain in the knowledge that in most cases things improve pretty quickly.
I honestly forget how many weeks post op I am now, it's 14 or 15, but I can now do pretty much anything I want, although I do still get stiff if I sit too long and I still get extremely tired if I overdo things.
Well done you !!
Holofernes the VERY wierd thing is I have no idea what kind of prothesis I have other than in French my surgeon said it is a resin. I am actually going to make an appointment to go back and see him simply so I can get the name of the manufacturer and find out more information on it. I mean if I ever need to have it replaced or omething I know nothing about it. Just "Resin" and I believe made in France.
I am actually feeling quite jealous about people getting ceramic. I asked about ceramic and he said no, I would get resin. I also would like to know if that is cemented in in did they use crews or jsut how is that thing attached in there. It eems I whould know this and I don't. I was to embarassed to admit when people were talking about bone cement, that I didn't even know what that was.
Yeah I was in really really bad shape the first time I commented on this forum. So many of you literally pulled me through. How many times did I write, "I have a lot of pain deep inside my right butt cheek", I thought that would never go away and yet it did.
Also Jodie you prob had fab food in French hosp. I got starvation rations when healing in first five days so important. Badly thought out as wd have taken in loads proper supplies. Only just putting on weight from 90lb to 110lb. Same age as you.
let us know about resin prosthesis. I got cemented ceramic on PLASTIC as the metal sockets were enormous sized for lumberjacks rather than tiny me. Hence it's still oversized. The plastic socket looks like a piece of Lego and I'm v conscious when putting pressure on it. Btw my surgeon was French and tres simpatico but that's not the point!
let us hope we get a few good yrs from our new hips inch'allah!
Hi I dont know which part of france you are in but my belle mere in normandy was sent to a thalassa centre for reeducation which involved hydro theraphy and other physio , masssage etc. if you are in the french system this should be covered by your assurance maladie . the centres are like a luxury health club by the sea there is one at roscoff. So if you have a carte vitale and assurance you could ask your medicine generaliste for a referral. bon chance
Thanks for the tip FrogN, however I told my physical thrapist yesterday to not come back. Yeah for sure the re-hab centers in France can be really really nice, and I would have been covered should I have chosen that. But I prefered to be at home just my preference. But thanks.
hi , i am having my THR on 22nd july, the system in france is i think fantastic, i am going to Evian after my op for three weeks, all covered on my carte vitale and top up, its a new facility, you can see it on the web, cant wait to feel better.
