Flare up with abdominal pain high temperature

After a relatively symptom - free 2 year period (diagnosed with Crohn's April 2015) and most recently on Humira. I had a flare up on 17 November with high temperature and abdominal pain and tenderness. I was admitted to the hospital and treated with i/v steroids and antibiotics for a week.

I was discharged with greatly reduced symptoms but still not 100%. A CT scan has now revealed that I have an abcess in the area I am still experiencing some pain and bloating. My IBD specialist hopes to get me in to drain it some time next week. Has anyone got any experience of this procedure? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Regards Pete

Hi Pete, I have suffered from Crohns for 53 yrs and throughout this period I have undergone several operations and procedures, one of these was draining of an abscess in my bowel. I remember before being diagnosed feeling really unwell and experiencing pain in my groin and down the inside of the same leg when I moved it. I was lucky in that at around that time I was due my annual check up at my local IBD clinic. After hearing of my symptoms and checking the area of discomfort, he told me that I was not going home since I had a abscess in my bowel. I was later rushed in to a operating theater where they first x-rayed the area to locate the exact position of the abscess . Having located it, they first numbed the area where the drain tube was to be inserted and then made a hole in my stomach wall for the drain tube. Although I was awake throughout the whole procedure I felt nothing except prodding and pushing as they were inserting the tube.. As they drained it the room was filled with the smell from the contents of the abscess, which was very strong. He said that they had drained around a wine glass full. Although It was a bit scarey not knowing what was going to happen during this procedure  It was not too bad, I have had a lot worse procedures.  Wishing you all the best and hope that you are soon feeling well again. Keep me informed.

Thank you so much for that description decndor. That's very helpful. 🙂
