Hello bob,

I had this problem a few months ago so I will tell you how I solved it. Remember I am not medically trained so if you do decided to try this, please speak to your GP first.

Lots of the foods we eat consist of sort chain carbohydrates which are not very easily absorbed in our small intestine. They are easily fermentated and cause water to enter the large intestine leading to gas, bloating and diarrhoea.

I had to start on the low FODMAP diet and there was a massive improvement for me. You might like to google "Low FODMAP diet" and see what it's like.

You can eat lean beef, fish, white meat turkey, white meat chicken.

greens such as kale or spinach, green beans, lettuce and tomatoes.

Berries, grapes and kiwi fruit.

Gluten-free bread and rice bread.

Oats, rice and quinoa.

It worked for me but check it out with your GP.

best regards

robert

Thanks robert will keep ur e mail for some of them foods you mention toast on brown bread will that be fine or stick to bran flake in the morning i am not a very good judge of wot foods are ok and wot are not..

bob,

I found it best to avoid wheat all together, but you might find it a good idea to avoid gluten altogether. I am not an expert, there are women and men on this forum who know a great deal more than I do about this but basically it makes good sense to avoid these substaces as they seem to create wind. I think it's to do with this short chain carbohydrate thing. Please take a good look at the low FODMAP diet.

robert

Worked for me too😄

Hi Bob, wind can be depressing as anything when it's uncontrollable. I have had IBD (irritable bowel disease NOT syndrome) proctitis, colitis, diverticular for over 20 years. I'm not a doctor but I can safely say I'm an expert on the suffering of it. I have tried everything over the years to stop flare ups and keep it in remission. The only things that work for me are not what most people suggest but then everyone is different.

Fibre causes gas to build up causing wind....Fruit, vegetables, wheatmeal, wholemeal, oats, fizzy drinks, beer, sweetners, all cause wind. Especially apples AVOID them.

You can buy charcoal tablets from the chemist to reduce wind but they don't work for me but may work for you or peppermint is good.

An acidic environment in the bowel will give rise to wind and flare-ups so taking half a teaspoon of Bicarbonated water in half pint of water a day will neutralize the over acidity and balance the alkalinity.  When my flares get really bad or the wind is driving me nuts I do a bicarb purge (1 heaped teaspoon bicarb in pint water) it sorts i out within minutes.

The only thing that works for me is refind foods..yes, the foods we're advised to stop eating. They have no to little fibre in and are easy transient foods taking little digestive effort so do not irritate the bowel any more than it already is.

Remember IBS/D is an inflamed bowel and easily irritated. Research the colon, bowel, gallbladder, liver and small intestine funtions and it will give you an insight into what is triggered by what then you;ll understand what to avoid and what is more likely to work for you.

Fat triggers the gallbladder to react which can cause griping pains. although fat is necessary for bowel function learn which fat is best (it's not the low fat margerines we are told it is either).

Lemon will trigger the liver to detox causing the bowel to empty so lemon juice in warm water a.m helps ease constipation.

To stop diarrhea eggs or meat help as they are harder to digest so slow transient down. White bread toasted with real butter. Cut back on fluids unless it's due to bacteria.

If tablets are causing it go back to your gp and request them changed as wind wn't help your IBS. Some medications make IDS/D worse - like antiinflammatories. Antiinflammatories shouldn't be taken by ibd sufferers.

Sorry I forgot to add.....it may be due to an intolerance of something. Gluten, lactose, fructose but not necesarily. You can always try eliminating these from your diet one by one (not all at the same time as you won.t know which if any you are intolerant to. Your symptoms may not be from an intolerance although they may seem similar not everyone with IBS is intolerant to these things. but if your eating wholemeal bread it's more likely the wind is due to the fibre in the wholemeal flour not the gluten.

Most extra strong cheeses are lactose free or at least extreme minimal as the lactose disolves the more the cheese matures so you don't need to seek lactose free cheese and there are a wide variety of milks on the market including goats milk which is easier on the gut than cows and lactose free cows milk as a starter.

Gluten free is not so easy to tolerate but there are many gluten free pasta, oats wheat products available now and rice is always a tolerable option. I personally found gluten free made my symptons worse. I'm not lactose intolerant but I stuck to rice and almond  milk as I prefered it.

Fructose is cutting out sugars - fruit, honey etc. Again certain fruits like apples pears plums will exacerbate wind, oranges will make stomach cramps worse and pineapple will cause a bowel movement,

Just to correct an error in my post above.... it should read half teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to half pint of water.

hope this helps. Just remember everyone is different and you may have to try different things that people suggest to find a solution.

Hi Bob,

Been doing the fodmap diet 2years approx. May not totally eliminate all the gut issues but for me helped a lot. Remember if our are suffering to use low finer food, bran flakes can irritate. Case balancing high and low fibre food. Read up on fodmap and see what you think.

Hi B2014 yes it can be very depressin having uncontrolable wind i never eat anything yesterday thought i would give my bowel a rest maybe not a really good idea to go a day without food of some sort...yes this site is very helpful and each person is different in how certain foods work for them i am going to try the charcoal tablets u mention and bicarbonated water the thing am confused a little bit about from wot i have read things like fruit veg and oats are the things to stick to and i must admit my diet was bad i am actually glad to be tryin these supposed to be good for you food..i take on board everything u have written here b2014 for me giving the chips and pies even chocolate a miss now had some fish and lettuce today and so far so good i am just tryin my best to eat a bit healthier and hope my bowel is ok with the food change and may i add not before time on my part thanks b2014 i find every comment helpful from folk like urself who been the course with this dreaded illness..

Been reading up this week on fodmap diet janet funny thing i just bought a box of bran flakes last week and wind got bit worse after i took them in the morning..good myself some white meat today had few bits of lettuce today also better stop that or i am going to be sittin like a rabbit at xmas lol..u have to see the funny side at times janet we all suffer enough with ibs dd..

Yes it's not nice, every time see GP they add to my list of ailments. As you say one has to keep on laughing.

Just hang in there Bob2020. Giving the bowel a rest is always a good idea occassionally.

Lol... Beleive it or not I eat chips when I have a diarrhea flare up. They also stop wind as the fried starch is a low transient food...lol! I stop eating them as soon as the flare is over though. Isn't it funny how different people can tolerate different things that others can't. 'One mans meat is another mans poison' as the old saying used to go.

I can't tolerate chocolate though - guaranteed to flare my IBD, Pastry too will do it. Although I will suffer the consequences occassionally for a chunk of chocolate lol

I can't eat wholemeal bread at all now (that's my fave bread) I can only eat white now so I make sure it's organic. The hardest part for me is I'm vegetarian and sometimes meat is the only food that will stop a flare and I cringe when I have no choice but to eat bacon or chicken. I only eat meat when all else has failed but it's another guaranteed food to stop diarrhea and or wind. I think it just blocks the intestines as meat is difficult for the body to digest but at least it stops the diarrhea and wind for a while.

Don't worry about it just eat good variety of foods and forget the rest If your body is not happy it'll let you know but keep away from fibre to control the windwink

Thanks B2014 for the good advice i just had a few chips myself there about 6 lol and ur right i have gave bowel a rest last few days seems to helped i little on the other hand got my preb drink in for the old camara now thats something to look forward to might have some with xmas dinner LOL

Merry xmas

hi bob 2020..other than dietary changes, i found supplementing with siberian pine nut oil to be beneficial in getting rid of flatulence
