Has anyone got advice on when you can fly after a thr? I'm hoping to have my op in july/ Augustus and we are going away the end of December l'm just wondering?
You should be more than fine with that time frame. Where are you going? I was originally booked to have my hip done on Aug 8th, then got a call on the 16th June saying there's been a cancellation so can I make it in for the 20th June, I said oh yes please because my wife & I are going to Florida on the 3rd October, now that would have been really tight with my original date! I think I read somewhere that the time frame is 6-12 weeks post op, just make sure you move about a lot when you fly.
I am currently in Spain, having flown short haul here for a holiday last week. My right THR was at beginning of January, so the time frame is roughly the same as yours. I'm happy so say that flying was no problem at all,but I did bring my collapsible walking stick with me just in case it was needed - but it hasn't been. I was careful to choose an apartment with a 'walk in' shower 'though as that's what i have at home. If you have any more questions then just ask. All the best
Hello margi
i had my THR February 21 and flew to corfu on may 9 - with consultants okay. All was fine - went to the loo twice and had an aisle seat so my operated side was on the aisle side.
I believe it will depend on your recovery time. Some are ok in 8 weeks, others in 20 weeks. You may find the steep steps still difficult and may need to notify the airline for a chair. It will also depend on whether you need a loo seat lift as I was told to take one with me on a cruise 10 weeks after surgery. I didn't need it but don't know how I would have fared with an airline. Had to cancel two theatre visits as wd have needed to stretch leg out and not sit still for long periods. How long is yr flight and can you get front row for leg room. I wd think positive and make sure yr insurance covers cancellation as it can take many turns this recovery business. You may be one of the lucky ones who's fully mobile and healed in 8-10 weeks. Best of luck. Take some dry nutritious food in with you as I starved and lost kilos and healing in first few days is crucial and depends on nutrition.
Thanks l will move around , the Canary Islands
Thanks thats something l should take
Great , thanks
Mine said short haul after 6 weeks and long haul not before 13 weeks. After 6 months risks of DVT revert to pre-op levels. If you are close to deadlines I would have a chat with the GP or hospital about precautions in addition to hydration and movement. Otherwise the problems are the space you have and the walking at the airport - how are you on travelators for example. Also consider any changes you have to make at airports eg terminal changes will you be OK with any luggage you have to move. You may be able to get a wheelchair at the airport or buggy transport but as I nearly discovered on my last pre-THR holiday the transport between terminals is not very reliable and the supply of water is extremely iffy - especially as it costs a fortune if you can find it and has to be discarded at security! But the staff on the plane were great and some of the individual 'pushers' at the airport lovely even if the organisation was chaotic - I was nearly denied boarding because the inter-terminal transport didn't work properly.
Thank you, its 4 plus hours ans l have extra leg room
Nice, wife & daughter off to Tenerife next week! The exit aisle is the best with huge leg room but unsure if you are allowed in those if you are unable or unwilling to help with the exit door itself if there's an emergency. Good luck with the op! I'm 11 days post op & would say I'm on par, no meds during the day but I do take some before bed! As Holofernes says, we are ALL different k I do expect some downturns along the way. One thing you can be sure of margin is the the sun & warmth will do you the world of good!
After suffering a Pulmonary Embolism 3 weeks after surgery, even though having all the correct injections and wearing those lovely stockings - I would be cautious. Speak to your Dr. They are the highly trained medical professionals and not us on here. All the good meaning and heartfelt hope that you will be be brilliant (and I'm sure you will!!) in recovery, cannot compare to the Drs advice. So ask your Dr if you can fly and get him to sign a permission to do just that. Then have a wonderful time!
Crap! Sorry to hear that! My brother had the same. What were your symptoms? Shortage of breath etc?
I had had what I thought was an asthema attack two days before, and kept getting very tired (thought that was just normal after the op).
Then on the Saturday went for a 2 stick walk and pushed myself to do about 500metres. On the Sunday I felt unwell - and had an ache in my back around the low right ribs. Thought I had pulled muscles on my good side from the walk, but the pain just kept getting worse and worse until I thought I was dying! So called and ambulance and the rest is history. I have three clots on my right lung - but I survived and am feeling good!!! The hip is doing great, the warfarin is doing its thing and although I still get low rib and back pain with the clots they will go eventually. So all is well :-)
Wow! Thanks for sharing & hope those clots go once & for all, take care!
Margih you should be fine after 6 weeks, you can also double check with your DP, you'll have to let them know at the airport as when you go through the scanning entrance your hip will set off the scanning beeper :-)
Good Luck!!
lol....... that should read check with your GP :-)
All the best!
Check with UR doctor. He will be the best judge for rehab time for u. I have had THR rehab in a few months others go on longer than a year. There are a lot of variables to consider to answer that question. I still cannot sit or stand for long periods. Walking in short bersts. Yet everyone is different. In most cases cautious recovery and UR trip may be something to work for during rehab but slowly don't rush or put the THR in jeopardy. U want UR THR to last for years.
The airline would probably not. I had a sprained wrist with a wrap on and they would not sell us a ticket in the exit row. Hips after surgery cannot sit for long periods or knees up or in a low seat. So u might think about a first class seat it's a win win. Besides u deserve it after THR ..
cheers
HOPE
On a similar theme, what are Forum members doing at airport security now? Arthritis Research UK leaflet talked about an Orthocard issued by Joint Action, but their website says they no longer issue them on economic grounds and suggests getting a letter from your GP or consultant, although says they may not be effective (in what... I'm not quite sure?) I'm resigned to having the full pat down every time now, but would be nice to have something to show security staff in a (vain?) attempt at smoothing the process.
