Hi
Sorry to join with a negative post. I am 52 - 53 in August. I am due to go on holiday to Crete in August. my first time abroad and first holiday since I was 15. My partner's daughter works in the travel industry, so all was booked early.
At consultation in November I was given a 3-4 month time scale for first hip replacement. Being new to this I had assumed all was in the system. I Had a copy of the report sent to my GP back in December.
Long and short of it is, they forgot to put me on the waiting list. I Have been given a pre-op assessment date of 23 March and to expect surgery in May.
Please, can anyone advice me on the chances of flying in August after this? No plans for jet skiing or paragliding :-)) I need both hips replacing, so will still be in severe pain. Six people are involved here and I am very upset about spoiling things.
Thank you very much.
I had mine done last Augut and flew to Spain in January no problem and am off to the US next month. My doc said three months before short haul and six months for long haul.
Hi,
I had my hip replaced in August and flew to Mexico in November. It was a 5 1/2 hour flight from my home town of Vancouver. No Problems. I really think you should be fine. Also it will give you something to look forward to. Dont have any idea how you will deal with the other bad hip as I have no experience with that. Might be an idea to see how hippie friendly your hotel will be. Lucky you going to the Greek Islands.
Hi I am afraid I am going to be a bit negative but I spent last year being told my op would be April then June etc . Was finally done 3 weeks ago . Don't know where you live so yhope you are better off than me . Had 3 pre op assessments because they ran out . I only believed I was having op when my bum was in the bed . Have you checked insurance for holb? I don't know about flying only a dr can tell you that because of clots . Good luck hope you make it .
Hi
Thats one of the questions you need an answer to so it goes in big letters on the top of your PRE OP ASSESSMENT list
I havent flown as quickly as that after a THR but not because I was told I couldnt.
Ask at your pre assess. or could you ring the consultants secretary......Mine is great, she will email the consultant if she doesnt know the answer and get back to me.
OK there are always chances that something will happed to delay the op as you found out but look on the bright side of it and if they say you can go you have something to really look forward to.
Dont forget to were socks or the white socks you are given int eh UK anyway.....I had to wear mine for 6 weeks, some people vary. Its to prevent blood clots.
So to wear something like that when travelling there and travelling back would be a good idea.
Check online about where you are going....do they hire out mobility scooters? I always do before I go
Good luck and lt us know what is said
Love

:-)
The advice in my booklet says it is all right to fly short haul after 3 months, but leave long haul until after 6 months. If you have the op in May you should be okay for August. It is not advisable to fly earlier than that because of DVTs, make sure you wear flight socks. As you are in your 50's your recovery should be quicker than someone who is older. Just follow the hospital's instructions and do as you are told and you should be okay. I was given a card at my post op appointment which says I have had a hip replacement and the details of when and where, which you can show them at the airport, because you are likely to set the alarms off when you go through the gateway for boarding, so I should ask about this as well. Best of luck.
Lol, I was quite disappointed when I didn't set the alarm off at the airport with my new metal hip. I went through no problems
First off if Yu get in touch with your consultant secretary and tell them how much pain you are in and keep telling them also tell them you are willing to go on the cancellation list keep trying to push to get it done earlier.
They only need a week between pre op and operation so I would keep pushing to get it done beginning off april, I did that last year as I was in so much pain I also told them I would go anywere to get it done quicker
I flew to the UK 9 weeks after my op, on my own, hired a car and did 700 miles in two weeks, all on my own no problems. My OS said I could fly to Chicago at 8 werks, you will be fine, but wear ted socks and I took asprin, walkedp and down and drank plenty of water.
It sounds like flying will not be a problem for you but I imagine that you might want to get up and move around some and pump your ankles quite often while sitting and you could wear compression socks/tights, (Tommy Copper has some great ones) to prevent blood clots.
My question is, with metal in your body, how can you pass through the metal detectors?
Regards,
Dawn, USA
Hi Dawn, I was given a card, which I showed to the security people, leaving Canada they took me to one side and patted me down (lovely). Coming home I realised that the security woman did not speak english so I didn't bother showing the card and walked right through and nothing happened, no bells no alarm nothing. So I guess some of the machines are more sensitive than others. Apparently the alarm should have gone off.
welcome to the forum. although recommendations vary dr to dr, my dr said i could fly as soon as i wanted post surgery.
i had a thr about 4.5 weeks ago and have flown 3 times since. the first two times was 3000 miles (~6 hours) 10 and 14 days post op. i was in business class and made sure to stand up/walk down the aisle every hour or so. the third time was 500 miles 24 days post op in coach. i was on blood thinners at the time and made sure to wear my stockings.
i had no issues on any of the flights.
good luck!
hmmm... you may want to check with your dr and make sure he put the implant in!!! ;-) i have triggered the alarm every time and need to be patted down if they don't have the new type machine.
Hi Oh2bhappy
definately discuss this at your pre op assessment and hopefully the answer will be yes you can go to Crete there is always ways around these things and hopefully you should not be in too much pain and it is not too far I was reasonably comfortable by then after my left total hip replacement BUT DO FOLLOW THE ADVICE given by your surgeon all the very best good luck and hope you can still go to crete let us know how you get on
I was wondering about this, especially with the pre op being so far ahead of proposed surgery. Thank you.
I know if it does get cancelled I will be so upset. Bad enough that they forgot to put me on the list 😔
