I was recently diagnosed with follicular thyroid cancer. I had surgery 3/28 to get the nodule and the left side of my thyroid removed. Post surgery I received the pathology reports indicating I have follicular thyroid cancer, with minimal vascular invasion. Because of my age (45), the size of the tumor (1.4 cm), and minimal vascular invasion, they are recommending a thyroidectomy AND radioactive iodine treatment. I've been told that my case is special in that I fall right on the line between "needing" a thyroidectomy and not. I've been told by the endocrinologist, that the only reason to do a thyroidectomy is so they can treat me with radioactive iodine, which will allow them to follow me long term. I think there's another way, and I have been gathering research to support my decision in going a nutritional/non-surgical route.
I am currently following a ketogenic diet, and want to be sure I am getting the best nutritional support without the sugar and carbs. I am working with an ND in Austin, TX.
I am gathering second and third opinions. Ideally, I'd like to work with someone who has had direct experience with this kind of cancer and the treatment for it, avoiding surgery and RAI.
