Hi. I'm Halima from California. I'm going to have my bunion surgery in a few weeks. Problem is I have a job that requires me to be on my feet 5+ hours a day. Any way to keep working after surgery?
First of all good luck with your surgery. I have had bunion surgery for both of my feet. You will be on crutches initially for about 6 weeks. You wil also be wearing a special boot and have to walk on your heel for a few weeks cannot remember how long for thou. It will take about 12 wks to fully be back to normal. I don't know what your job is but i think you will find it very difficult to work for the first few weeks. Have a word with your surgeon about your rehabilitation. Also have a word with your employer as to weather you can have a sitting down job for a while. I live in Britain and this is how it is done here.

Thank you for advice and suggestions Elizabeth. Your post parallels exactly what my podiatrist said. I've requested post-op physical therapy and spoke to my manager. I've done quite a bit of research as to what to expect after the surgery and feel I am quite prepared as of now. The only thing I am nervous about is the surgery itself. I am curious as to how you manuevered around though. Did you find driving a vehicle difficult or did not operate any vehicles at all until given the green light by your doctor?
The surgery is quite straight forward. I had one done under general anesthetic, and a few years later the other done with a local. With general it takes a bit longer before your discharged because you can feel or be sick. With a local as soon as i could use the toilet and have a drink and a bit to eat was discharged. However the rehabilitation is the same. The local was okay except for the injections to numb the foot was quite a few and painful. Other than that i was fine. As for driving i would think its difficult , i do not drive. The boot you will be wearing is a special boot that allows you to walk on your heel, after about 4-6 weeks you will be able to put weight on the whole foot. You will definately not be able to drive for a few weeks because you cannot put weght or pressure on the toes and the boot is bulky thou light. The boot as velcrove straps and you will be allowed to take it off when resting and asleep. Do as exactly what the consultant says otherwise you will undo the whole operation. I can say that the prodcedure is worth it as in the end as you will be pain free and have a better looking foot. The thin scaring is hardly noticable and i struggle now to see it. Hi Yes the operations on both feet were successful. Had them done a few years ago now and had no problems since.

Yes i have osteo arthritis in my lower spine for the last 20 years, since i was 40. Any reason why you ask this question.
