I am 13 weeks past THR. From the beginning of rehab, I have had swelling of both feet and stiffness when I move them. Not the kind of stiffnesstgat I can’t walk, but I know it’s there. Sometimes when I sleep the heels of my feet hurt. Does anybody else have or had this problem after THR? Thanks!
Steve
I have pain in one of my heels too when I’m in bed. I don’t have any words of wisdom but look forward to hearing what others have to say on this. I’m 4 weeks and 3 days post THR.
Hi Mandy,
Happy to see this is not an isolated incidence. Take care!
Steve
Hi, if you have sore heels you may be starting with plantar fascitis. Make sure your shoes are supporting your feet or buy some shoe inserts. 👣
Hi Lisa,
Glad you replied. However, this is definitely NOT plantar fasciitis m. Thanks anyway! Take care.
Steve
Swelling is not at all uncommon, ice and elevation are best for this.
I had stiffness when initially getting up from sitting down, it is much better now but takes a long time (months).
Is the pain in your heels due to the swelling, or to pressure due to having to sleep on your back? I used a cushion between my feet to help take the weight of the bed covers off my feet as my toes were hurting.
I see you have ruled out plantar fascitis, I had this before the THR too, good quality (expensive!) shoe inserts as recommended by my physio worked well for me for that.

Hi Rocketman,
Even though I’m 13 weeks past? When I wake up my feet are normal size. But when I walk or sit (throughout the day) they swell. I can’t keep them elevated all day!! I guess it will take time!! Thanks? Regards,
Steve
I am 12 weeks today, and jealousies are beginning to show when I talk to or read about THR people who say they have gone back to work, running, tennis, etc.
Since about 4 weeks ago, I now have electric shocks that are running down the side of my leg into my foot, and my foot is going numb at times or with tingly feelings. This electric shock used to just go to the knee and stop.
I still have a pinching /aching ( not sharp) pain around the mid scar area most always ( front of thigh, anterior). It is so bad, I need pain pills in the afternoon, which now, I am afraid I have become dependant on.
I used to be in gymnastics a LONG time ago, so I feel like I should be rebounding, pun intended, better by now, and have earned the right for NO pain.
have been a good girl doing the physical therapy on my own.
So this is just whining , I know everyone heals at their own pace. But by now, I want to heal at someone else's pace.
Hi Steven073
I have bad heel burn after surgery and it is so painful with bedding on top of my feet. I bought a physical aid that tucks under the mattress and comes up and over the mattress keeping the bedding off my feet. I also found woolen socks of benefit.
All the best. The things that affect us apart from the THR can be painful too.
Good answer, Sandy- everyone heals at their own pace! I’ll try to remember that! Take care.

Hi Maree,
That reminds me, for weeks I had pain. Much less since I slept with my feet out of the covers!
Steve
yes, that's a bit too long to have bad swelling ..... maybe get it checked by surgeon / hospital / GP.
Hi Steven, I don’t know about the swelling but as for your heels hurting have you tried putting a pillow under ur knees or slightly below them to raise your feet off the bed just a little bit?
Hope all this turns around for you.
Hi Sandy, I too have pain down the side of my thigh to my knee. I’m 4 wks post op. Though I don’t have an electric shock feeling. It’s more of a dull ache or pulling. I now feel it below my knee just to the side of my shin and down to my little toe. I had been doing well and was walking a mile a day and this started last week.
I’ve been looking on the internet and the closest thing I have found is iliotribial band syndrome. It’s a muscle that runs down your thigh to your knee. Very common problem with runners but can also be with people that have one leg longer than the other, a pelvic tilt, or hip problems.
I can’t walk for long now and I’m very frustrated. I have a call into my surgeon to hopefully pay him a visit.
Thanks, Graham,
I gave an appointment the beginning of January. I’ll bring it up. Thanks.
Steve
Good morning
I had trouble with my heels after op and found putting pillow underneath knees helped with this.
I also found that if you fold your pillow in half so you now have half a pillow if you put this in between your bottom and top sheet at the bottom of your bed it will lift the covers off your feet altogether and takes the pressure off your feet, a bit cheaper than a bed cradle.

Hi Steven
I developed sore heels when lying in bed after my first thr last year. This was caused by lying on my back all night, every night, for six weeks as per the restrictions then in place. I found some sheepskin bootees online specifically for heel pressure sores and that solved the problem. A small piece of sheepskin under the heels would probably work as well.
After my second thr 4 weeks ago, I've been alternating back sleeping with sleeping on my non-op side with a firm pillow between my legs. I've not had any problem with my heels, and am otherwise (so far, fingers crossed!) recovering well. How closely we stick to the standard restrictions is obviously up to each individual to decide. Personally I believe some of the 'one size fits all' restrictions are overly cautious.
Best of luck with your recovery

Hi Dsilk,
That’s good advise. I’ll try it. Thanks.
