Hi Melbi
I went 'cold turkey' and when the withdrawal symptoms were severe,
mainly, for me, insomnia and anxiety, I was given 2mg diazepam (a minor tranquillizer) 4 x a day for 7 days, by a doctor at 'NHS Direct'. I took the diazepam when the symtoms were most intense.
I also had a lot of support from my partner, who told me I had to get through it because of our children.
Whatever you decide to do, I hope you soon feel better.
 Hi X, what dosage of citalopram were you on?
Worried, as I am on 30 and its about the only thing thats getting me thro, that and night nurse
I'm carrying on with them for 1 more week then if still no better I will come off them.
Doctor gave me diazepam the first week I went to see her before starting me on citalopram and they didn't do anything for me. I am convinced should I ever need an operation while I'm like this that not even an anaesthetic would knock me out!
It's raining hard and blowing a gale here at the moment but if it settles down I'm off to buy some night nurse too
If only the doctors would listen then maybe we wouldn't have the need to buy over the counter products to help minimise the anxiety.
Codiene works for me but don't like to take too much of it.
I've also bought some day time kalms to see if they help.
At the moment Margaret's breathing techniques are definitely helping - I just have to keep remembering to do them.
Thanks millions for that tip Margaret it definitely minimises the feelings of anxiety and the sighing lessens too.
I think I even had a happy moment earlier when doing them.
Melbi xxx
Dont know, Melbi, if we told the doctor how many over the counter drugs we do, they wolud probably prefer us just to drink that bottle of wine
Hess doing my head in, and i have some sort of pain round my kidney, which is slowly getting worse. Oh and Ive to stop listening to my music cause guests are in....cant believe him..Like he would listen . If I have his effing dada round more than three times a week, he does not go down as a guest in my house, as well I have a right to a life and if I bloody well want to listen to my headphones then I god well will...GGGGRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! Its not like his dad stops us arguing or puts his son straighto his son has no respect for his own father......god,,,,so duh!!!!! hes off to work and i am keft with his god damb dad who cant hear anyway, and watches the victorian abuse coming from his hypocritical son. Bluh!!! Sick!
I think it's time to stop looking over the counter products up on the internet. If my doctor ever stopped to ask me if I'm taking anything else she would have a fit at the long list of things I've tried.
I've told her everytime I can't relax and aasked for something to help me - she refuses to give me anything and says to citalopram will start to work soon, so in the meantime I have to self prescribe.
 Me too, Melbi, self prescribe....wed propbably make the best doctors, cause we have the entire contents of the pharmacist chemocals in our medicne cupboards, mixed with alcohol...perefecto....we will be fine!!!! Just druggies..us !!!!!
I am not sure if this will put your mind at ease or cause you to make a rash decision, but I went cold turkey after four weeks of taking 20mg a day of citalopram. This was on the 8th of February, almost 6 weeks ago. I felt none of withdrawal symptoms mentioned, and although my mental state has not improved, it has not suffered either. Of course, I strongly suspect that I am a rare exception where 20mg of this drug a day simply wasn’t having any effect on me. It was probably reckless but I honestly felt that it was doing nothing to help me. Perhaps I will share the whole story sometime, but for now I shall echo the thoughts of the other members, and urge you to continue on with the medication and the support of your GP.
I also wish you well on your road to recovery
