Formication

I constantly have the sensation of insects crawling under my scalp causing me to scratch - it's driving me mad!

Does anyone else have this problem and how do you get rid.

Hi Lorna, don't think I'm going to be much use because I also have formication all over the place and it drives me nuts. But.........to date, I've found nothing to stop it. Also constantly getting strange itchy bits when there's nothing to see but I can scratch myself so much that I bruise! I do also have Sjogren's Syndrome and the itching isn't uncommon with that because of how dry my skin can get in spite of slathering on tons of moisturiser from top to toe twice a day and taking any antihistamines just makes my already dry mouth, even drier.

So, if anybody can find a way to get rid of the formication, I'd also be very grateful.

Sorry for being useless Lorna.

Im interested to know too, I get it all over my body

Thanks for your response. hippyginger - its comforting to know I'm not alone - I've read somewhere that formication has got something to do with the central nervous system and I need to see a neurologist rather than a rheumatologist - might be worth a try

Heard it might have something to do with the central nervous system Louise and a neurologist might be able to help

Funnily enough Lorna, it was my Neurologist who referred me to my Rheumatologist lol I was diagnosed with axonal peripheral neuropathy by the Neurologist after blood tests and neurophysiology tests and she suspected that I may have either Lupus or Sjogren’s syndrome. So my referrals went in reverse of yours lol Turned out that I do have the auto-immune disease of Sjogren’s.

But when I last saw the Neurologist I hadn’t mentioned the formication because I simply had had for so long it didn’t come to mind during any of my consultations. One of those things you just get so used to you almost take it for being normal. I was given an open appointment so that in the event of any new nerve type symptoms I am to ring the Consultant’s secretary for an appointment, but I’m reluctant to do that since I’m pretty sure it’ll just turn out to be another fibro phenomenon and gawd knows there’s so many of them lol

I do hope your Rheumatologist refers you to the Neurologist, even if it’s just for peace of mind that it IS down to the fibro because as we all know, it can mask other diseases.

Good luck.
