Four months post op - trip to France

Hi All,,

well, four months post THR in Exeter, and ten years post a resurfacing on other hip in oxford, Chrissy and I went to Brittany to stay for 5 nights with my cousin in delightfully tranquil Brittany, France.

journey over by Brittany ferry was fine, except for STUPID steep metal stairs from dock to level six on boat with suitcase. I struggled but OK - sorry for a lass on crutches and young mum with kids - and no staff offered a lift option  instead. France end has gentle sloping walking ramps - soooo much easier! Air flight back was fine.

Delighted how easily I managed the  stairs in old house, and stone steps at various sites. Walking 6-7 miles on 3 days was no problem. did a bit of gentle jogging too! sleeping never a problem as I've slept on side from day one post operation, and given junior asprin not nasty stockings luckily.

Work in prgress: dropped some Euros at airport and still hard to stoop and pick them up; still hard to kneel for more than a few moments when helping in in their garden, going down on or up on two knees is fine - but can't lean back onto lower legs well! Crouching is fine at gym on X machine using hands on straps for support, but not at all in real life.

Overally very happy with progress, but thus  still a bit more to achieve. Planning some (physio approved!) breast stroke at outdoor pool on monday, and a very dry garden to water today.

Hugs to all hippies and potential hipies!

Hi Mic .... oh wow ... how great to read your story ... those steps are a nightmare to begin with ... to bend and pick up things dropped are challenging, aren't they? to be a woman then has its advantage - always some gentleman who will pick it up for me - easy does it with bending back wards - I think you are doing exceptionally well - enjoy your day - warm hug

Hi Mic

WoW you really are doing well. It is great to read how well you coped with your trip.

Obviously there will always be a few hurdles but at least they were small hurdles to get over.

Hope your day is as sunny as mine is at the moment.

How nice you were able to enjoy your getaway. France sounds like a dream vacation for me, someday I hope. Sounds like your comin along nicely, yes we still have some little challenges but it just keeps getting better as time passes. Thanks for sharing your trip.

Well done! It's amazing how far we have all come. Good luck regards Amanda

Hi Mic,

We have just got back from Switzerland.  Went on a coach trip and managed really well with stairs on ferry and getting on and off coach, and did lots of walking, uphill and down, on and off trains, panoramic trains and cog trains.  Took a stick just in case I got tired at all, but did not use it at all.  Weather brilliant and had no problems at all.  Very pleased with myself at post op 6 months.

All you Hippies, good luck to you, at 6 months you will feel marvellous!

Good to hear you are getting on okay.  I am finding kneeling a bit of an issue. I really have to think about it before actually kneeling. Strange how we take things for granted until you find you can't do it so easily.  Keep going with your recovery. sarah X
