freaking out

saw consultant about piles in Feb and he tried to put something up my back passage to check. lubed it up no sedation and told me to relax but so uncomfortable that I was screaming out not in pain but discomfort

then was due to have sigmpoid but he changed it 2 months ago for colonoscopy,

if he couldnt get a few inch up without my cussing and shouting out then how they gonna do the whole bowel? the pain doesnt bother me the discomfort does. I know i need it done to check why the blood is there but i dont want to waste anyone time and even though i`m being sedated if its like the first time i wont be able to last 5 mins nevermind 45 min..itys ok theym telling you to relax but its not them in severe discomfort

im really thiking of rescheduling but know i need it done

Hi.

I'm not surprised it was uncomfortable - I've had a couple of digital (as in finger) examinations and they aren't terribly pleasant!  - but to be honest you hardly feel the tube go in - it's more slippery than a finger and possibly not as thick. The real discomfort of the procedure if you have any (and many people don't) will be when they fill your intestines with air to get around the corners and to be able to see more clearly. But don't worry about it. The sedation they give you doesn't knock you out but it does make the time seem to go quicker.

Let us know how you go, but I'm sure it won't be as uncomfortable in the first instance as you fear.

Cheers mate so not as bad as the digital one then? The sedation doesn't knock you out or stop the discomfort then?

so perhaps you need a heamorroidectomy.. There are creams spray that can be used to numb the area for your comfort..the doctor should have used one of these.. Refuse next time until the give you a local spray anaesthetic

You need a sigmoidoscopy.. Perhaps you have ulcers higher up? Ulcerative Colitis.. What are your bowl movements like? Loose? Take some pain relief an hour before you go next time...

Hi dawn

I went in for sigmoid but he asked about my bowel movements and told him loose so he said colonoscopy. But that meant waiting 2 months despite him saying soon

I just know if it's as bad as last time when I had the digital inserted it was so uncomfortable I won't be able to do it

add in the fact I feel physically nauseous and I don't know how I'm going to do the 2ltr of flexible prep either

I wish I'd kept my mouth shut 2 months ago about changes in bowel movements and I'd have had the sigmoidoscopy then

Some people go completely under with the sedation - I didn't. Everybody reacts differently. For me it just made me feel more relaxed about the whole thing. You will be fine - and it'll put your mind at rest if they don't discover anything nasty!

No - you need to be up front about anything like that - I went for a colonoscopy because of loose stools - nothing was found. I had a gastroscopy last week (which is worse I think) - that's the one down your throat. With me it'll probably be a case of "We can't find anything else wrong so you must have IBS" - but you can never be sure that that's what the problem is, especially if you've had bleeding as well. It's always better to get these things checked out. No they're not much fun, but the alternative could be worse. And honestly, it wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. Different to what i expected. Hope it goes OK.

Weird Mate I had a gastrscopy and it was a doddle apart from the evil spray that made me wretch. I guess we're all different. I'm just wary of things going up. Down is fine

You should be given an option for pain relief.. Ask for it or ask for a GA if they offer it? so there is a thorough investigation. Normally loose stools along with streaked blood could be the result of ulcers,  yes Colonoscopy would be the next test..also a stool test Occult blood. Don't accept what the medics say hold out for what makes you comfortable .. Tell the you suffer anxiety whic goes hand in hand with IBS ..

Why is the faecal occult blood (FOB) test done?

There are several disorders which may cause bleeding into the gut (intestine). For example, gastric or duodenal ulcers, ulcerative colitis, bowel polyps, and bowel (colorectal) cancer. If these bleed heavily then your stools (faeces) would be obviously bloody or a very black colour. However, sometimes these disorders only bleed with a trickle of blood. If you only have a small amount of blood in your faeces then the faeces look normal. However, the FOB test will detect the blood. So, the test may be done if you have symptoms in the tummy (abdomen) such as persistent pain. It may also be done to screen for bowel cancer before any symptoms develop (see below).

I originally got diagnosed with stage 4 hamerroids which was causing the blood on toilet tissue and the plan was get them banded and have the sigmoidoscopy

now colonoscopy but no mention of banding

It might help to look at a diagram how you're digestive system is plumbed in so to speak. You have the rectum, the sigmoid colon, the descending colon, leading to the transverse colon, to the ascending colon. If you look at the diagram, you can see where it could hurt. I've had a few colonoscopies the first emergency one as I was bleeding, when you fill the loo with blood you know it's serious. I just wanted to know what happens inside me, I think the blood shocked me that much anything could be done. Next I had to drink all this bowel prep to clear me out so the consultant can have a clear view. You have to drink a lot of water and bowel prep like fibrogel. There was another prep too, but you drink so much water. The morning of the colonoscopy I think you can have a bit of white bread, but not much else.

The thing is like a tube with a scope on the end, the first bit is easy, then going up into the sigmoid is a little painful up into the descending colon, when the scope gets to the transverse colon at an almost right angle it could hurt then, the consultant might press on that part of you stomach to help guide it round the bend. Usually there's the screen so you can see what's going on, it should be clear on the screen so you can see your ulcers. Make sure you relax, if you tense up it'll hurt more. I was in such a state of shock the first time that because I was bleeding, I didn't feel a thing. The.next into the sigmoid, into the descending, and I remember across into the transverse colon did hurt a bit,but I thing it's more shock. Anymore I don't recall too well. It is somewhat a releif to get it over with. Stay calm, relax and don't tense up, it'll hurt more when it's over you can relax with some real food.

I won't be able to relax. I couldn't relax when I got the digital tube as I was that uncomfortable. I can't see how I can relax with 4 foot of tubing in me. 45 minutes no way. I hope the sedation is strong

It needs sorting though. Not normal to have stomach ache and nausea all the time

Sorry to hear you can't relax, if they give you sedation I don't know if you remember a thing. I have friends in the states who get completely knocked out, if they will do that for you? Is it just the fear of the unknown? If you get that desperate you'll let them do it. Just find out how long the colon really is, it might surprise you.

Just the discomfort from having a small tube up there was bad enough. The thought of that much tube and the discomfort I had last time doesn't appeal

Have you sometimes done bigger poo than the width of the scope?

Not sure

it's the thought of it up and how it felt before

Just a quick notion, have the consultant explain to you what's happening. It's going from the sigmoid into the descending part, I think, that was a bit of a shock. It might feel odd has the consultant had one? I think I remember the first look by Dr wasn't that great at local surgery, 😬

Please please don't worry, I'm due for my first combined Endoscopy tomorrow. I read forums giving a mixture of feedback and it seems people only have issues if they don't prepare adequately or don't have pain relief .

When your doc tried to examine you he/she only used lubricant, when you go for your endoscopy you'll be offered pain relief so you won't feel the scope entering you and sedative beforehand so you relax as if you've had a couple vodkas.

The prep drink I had this morning tasted like lemons but sweeter and was easy as I drank in one go

Make that appointment x

I'm confused Sounds like you've had a sigmoidoscopy by your consultant. Your description is similar to mine years ago when haemerrhoids were diagnosed, but I never had any pain and the whole thing took just a few minutes, The sigmoisoscope only travels about 6 inches or so up your rectum anyway...

A colonosopy is more invasive and uncomfortable and in my case lasted 45 minutes. I've had 3 of them now since 2005,  with no sedation, but none of them caused prolonged, excruciating pain - just some discomfort with the odd sharp twinge.Having a tooth removed at the dentist was far more unpleasant.

It seems here it's mainly women who suffer agony with this procedure, rather than blokes for whatever reason. I found the procedure a breeze, and the vast majority do. Just make sure you are given Buscopan (injected into the back of your hand) before the procedure as it relaxes the colon and works also as a painkiller  Not every hospital uses this drug, and possibly that's when the procedure might cause undue pain with some patients.
