I have been told that i need my gallbladder removed. I have a preop appointment and am having second thoughts which has not helped looking on the Internet about potential risks. I have never had a op before and I also suffer with anxiety. I wanted to know if anyone has had their gallbladder out before and their experiences?

Hi Jason yes there are many horror stories out there but the surgery has a 90% success rate with 10% encountering problems afterwards. I had mine removed nearly 4 months ago and I haven't had a good experience so far but most people do. Have you stones or inflammation? I hope some more people come on here to reassure you that they had a successful outcome. I spoke to several people prior to The op and all had a positive outcome. X

had mine removed a year ago been fine .
prior to removal I suffered anxiety which focused on a food phobia ..
i had suffered with undiagnosed gallstones for about 15 years believing it to be stress anxiety gastritus ulcers etc...
the difference since removal I am calmer , I don't feel nauseous at all. I can eat and not feel sick or suffer what I thought were mild panic attacks but I realise now we're gallstone attacks sweating heart pounding hands shaking feeling so so sick ..fainting having to lye down until it goes off. Then the colic attacks were vomiting continuously for 5-6 hours pain like a heart attack so you feel faint agony in your ribs and intestines ...so I now don't fear attacks , don't feel generally unwell have been able to reverse my food phobias ...I am a calmer person..
i was terrified too of the op. I cried when they wheeled me down to surgery . But it is a straight forward op. I went home same day .and when I got home that night I felt well like something rotten was gone ..
I guess your decision for surgery depends on how miserable your symptoms are they can become unbearable ...just a thing to consider ...
Jason I have had many operations throughout my life many really major ops and when I was told I needed my Gall Bladder removed I put it off for 5 years putting up with the dreadful pains after every meal not knowing when it was going to strike, anyway in the end I had to have it done and I have to say that I have never felt so well after an op! I was wide awake when I was taken back to my room my hubby was sitting waiting and I was holding conversations even my daughter rang me and I was talking to her! So you go ahead and have it done especially if your in really bad pain! xxxx
Hi Jason, I had mine removed at the beginning of February and have been great since then. Everyone is a bit nervous before the surgery but just go with the flow. The day after the op was a bit uncomfortable but apart from that I've had no pain at all. Bonus is I can eat what I want without fear of the dreaded pain. You only tend to hear about peoples bad experiences, no one wants to know about the good ones. I would highly recommend the op, the pain from the gallstones is crippling and I'm truly glad to be rid of them x
My experience was quite easy. In and out procedure. If I knew it was that easy I would have done it sooner. I was sore for a while but that's about it. I feel like my tummy can hold a lot less food though if that helps. No need to worry, it's an easy and standard procedure
Had to wait months for my op, was so ill I eventually had to be done as an emergency, I was sitting up in bed knitting (something I didn't have to concentrate on) as soon as I got back on the ward. Back home the next day a little sore, but so relieved to be feeling so much better. Now two years on you'd hardly know I'd had it done.
Six weeks ago I had to have an ORIF (screw) for a broken foot and ankle, it was my 8th operation and no less scary than the first.

It is true you hear so many horror stories, I had mine removed 2 weeks ago and I was petrified, but I neednt have been, the surgeon was lovely and put my mind at rest, when I woke up after I was in no pain at all just tired, please dont worry go ahead get it done everything will be OK. Many thanks for your feedback and reassuring words everyone this make me feel better. I have stones and I am 33 and have had 2 hospitalsations because of pain but my specialist said it will get worse so best to remove now. I will let you all now how I get on x
