Gastric Bypass Post Op Tips/Help

Hi All. Thank you for taking time to read this.

I'm 5 days post op from a gastric bypass here in the uk. As a tall man, 6'5" and weighing 28 stone, it was time to do something,

I'm suffering with post op blues. I can't seem to eat enough to get any energy to do anything. I was in hospital for 2 days and have spent the majority of the other time in bed. I weighed myself today and I've lost 17lbs in 5 days which is telling me there is something wrong. I can't eat more than a few teaspoons of food or a few sips of a drink which is giving me dumping symptoms if i drink anything other than water or milk.

Does anyone have any useful tips on how i can boost my energy levels, whether from food or supplements to regain some normality.

I'm weak, scared and i need advice. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated x

Hi Christian, I'm sorry to hear your not having a great time at the moment, from

what I have read about the gastric bypass operation, it will take your body some

time to a adjust. Your stomach needs time to recover from the operation before it

is able.to cope with eating anything other than tiny amounts. Get plenty of rest and take it easy as you will be weak and tired due to the small amount that you are

eating, make sure that you keep drinking even if it's tiny amounts to ensure you

don't get dehydrated.

You will experience a big weight loss as you are only taking in small amounts so

you are not getting the calories in, This should settle down in time but it is very

early days and you need to take good care of yourself.

If you are worried contact your bariatric team for advice as i'm sure they will be

able to support you and offer advice.

I wish you every success in your weight loss journey and hope you begin to feel

better soon.

I have felt the exact same it's a week today since my op. I had to come off the co codamol medication as it was making me feel so sick all the time and just didn't feel right at all. Since stopping the co codamol I do feel normal to a degree but still struggling to eat and drink as much as I should. I called the dr out on Sunday as had a temp but that's settled but have got terrible runs which the team think is a bug!!! I keep getting pain and discomfort at the wound lower right hand side obviously the bowel area but not sure. I am going to see the consultant on thurs so see what they say. I think it is a difficult time, iv sat and cried, regretted it, but my family keep me positive. Iv found ice pops have helped me seem to enjoy those more than drinking all the time. Sugar free jelly too. As for eating, like you I have hardly managed anything a little bit of puréed porridge, soup or yoghurt but only a couple of teaspoons. The important thing is to keep hydrated. Make up some of ur own ice lollies or try different drinks, I have noticed massive taste changes I don't really like tea anymore and used to love no added sugar vimto but don't anymore. Lots of things happening we just have to ride the storm but do our best, especially keeping hydrated. Tx

Hi!

I had a gastric band on Friday and I'm feeling scared to eat or drink too much!

My nurse said I need more protein, so lentil soup or blended meaty soups!

I'm also taking dispersible multi vitamins that you just put 1 in water every day!

I think if you are concerned you should phone your hospital. My nurse said that appetite tends to come back after a week or so!

If your the same as me (although different surgeries) you are maybe scared to do damage by eating/drinking too much?

Make sure your sitting up properly when eating and drinking! I think it will just take time!

But call the experts if your worried x
