Gastric problems.

Hi all.

It's been a while since I posted on here but I have been keeping up on all posts. I was wondering if anyone else has to take Omeprazole for acid. I have been on it now for a while (20mg). How do you feel when on it. Do you have any side effects. My doctor wants to increase my dose to 40mg but I'm very reluctant to. The doctor has suggested an endoscopy which terrifies me. I worry that I've got an ulcer ( I'm sure unnecessarily!!) but it has set my health anxiety off. This peri sure is hard going.

Any thoughts?

Thanks all.

Helen.

Helen,

gastric issues seem to be common. I take omnepazole now with no side effects and I am having an endoscopy done on 19th. I've had a colonscopy before and its the same thing but other end lol. You won't feel anything. Since I've had gastric problems for the last 2 years, I feel better having my tummy checked. You may feel better if you have it and find out there is nothing wrong

Hi Helen

i have just come off Omesprozle, I too had really bad acid for no reason, so had a endoscopy (make sure you get sedated, you can't remember anything , it really is nothing to be afraid of when you go for the sedation, your not asleep but very drowsy) it turned out I had h Pylori, had the avid tablets with antibiotics and it cleared up, still suffered a if but not as bad, and it ended up been the anxiety that was causing the acid, I now have the anxiety under a better control so no longer need the omesprozle. I was also on 40mg it is safe to take because I asked the pharmacist about it, please don't worry and the endoscopy will settle your mind once you gave had it xx

Hi Nancy. Thanks for this. I think I will see doc next week. I just don't fancy the endoscopy.

Helen.

Hi Sue

Thanks for the reply. As I said to Nancy I don't fancy the endoscopy. Terrified they might find something but I suppose it would be better to have. Funnily enough I've only noticed the stomach problems more since the doctor suggested one!

Helen.

The consultant who did mine Helen, said it was definitely anxiety related and he was right, the less I worry and stress the acid problem goes, I wish you all the best, the good thing with the endoscopy they tell you straight away, you don't after wait for any results, your better finding out because if there is anything it can be treated and you can start to feel normal again xx

Prilosec 40 is fine I'm on that and Zantac just remember long use of Prilosec is not recommended because of rebound symptoms I'm a nurse practitioner I don't leave my patients in that for more than a few months. Discuss with doctor about the use of Zantac twice a day instead

I know hun but my daughter had one in her early 20's and said its no big deal at all. You are sedated and feel nothing. You more than likely have nothing wrong but acid refux. Anxiety can bring it on but it will give the doctor a course of action to help you

I've been taking Omeprazole with no side effects - look at your diet and avoid all the usuals - caffiene and alcohol particularly bad.  I've had an endoscopy but chose not have the sedative - don't advise that at all!!!  So get it all checked out.  You'll be fine.  Stick to alkaline foods - good luck

Hi Helen

I have been on these for at least 8 years, the last 4 on the 40mg dose. It wasn't until I learned how to actually take them that things settled down. My GP said 1 x 40mg pill at night but I was told by a throat specialist to take 20mg half an hour before breakfast and then half an hour before dinner. Sorted! Truly I would really encourage you to go for the endoscopy, I'm sure I had a light sedative when I went (and there's always Rescue Remedy). If you don't go then the worry can only continue... sage advice given to me by a friend. I wish you well

Hi

Whilst peri is a nightmare, i think i would fear the endoscopy more, what is Omerprazole is it a pill, or medicine for acid?? ive taken ant acid called Asilone in medcine form and it worked for me, does your tummy feel like it has a massive butterfly in it, and your heart beats fast, and you cant sleep?? but its the stomach that is worse in your case, if so,  its a sign of too much adrenalin in your system,  drink plenty of water without over doing it, messing your electrolytes up, take gentle exercise, to avoid fatigue becoming worse, and then producing more adrenaline, causing a vicious circle,

Because menopause affects our sugar level, eat little and often, eating a high protein low unrefined carb diet, avoidjng sugar as much as you can, you need to keep your sugars balanced, like your water, and exertion, to avoid highs and lows of everything, because when you eat refined sugar inparticular, its absorbed very quickly, into our system, and to bring the sugar level back up, the body then sends out masses of  adrenalin and thats what can cause your acid probs, if this is what has been happening to you, that you notice acid stomach comes on after eating, but, then when you try to eat again your symptoms go, well they go because the adrenalin has brought the sugar level back up, and eating makes it level off so you feel better, but eating then creates more adrenalin, and thats where you get the vicious circle from, if this is you, then its as sugar problem you have, your not a diabetic its the menopause doing it, and its happening because your putting the wrong stuff  and too much of it in to your system  during a menopausal flare,  so you need to eat little and often, protein based as protein is absorbed slower than carbs, to avoid the adrenalin rush

I think i would try a diet change to avoid the endoscopy first, what have you got to lose, if it doesnt work, go for the endoscopy, or, ask for a barium meal instead, not a nice drink to have for it, tip ask for a straw.......... but you dont have hose pipe  rammed down your throat with that.

Lsten to your body and help it to balance things out,  its trial and error, but if you can do learn this it will help you control your symptoms.

Hi Helen, I was taking it for a while but worried about the side effects.

I found that ginger capsules and ginger tea worked for it better anyway.

I had 2 ginger capsules before food and was drinking a lot of ginger tea made with fresh ginger.

It resolved on its own before I went on HRT. I still have the habit of drinking a glass of ginger cordial before I go to bed though but really only because I love it now.

Yes agreed ginger capsules work for me also x

I completely understand. My doctors have been prescribing Prilosec for me too but I have found it to be ineffective. I have tried over the counter products such as Prevacid and Zantac. They recently switched my prescription to Zantac. That works when it wants to. My problem is I am inconsistent with taking it. If I don't feel the burn then I don't take it . My doctor said that you have to keep taking it in order for the heartburn to be controlled. If I go for a few days without taking anything then the heartburn comes back with a vengeance. I haven't gone for a scope yet but have been contemplating the idea.

Dear Helen,

I was on omeprezole for a while due to gastitis, it was ok for a while but after some time i felt it made my symptoms worse, i had terrible gas with it and switched to zantac in the end. I chose to have an endoscophy because i wanted peace of mind, i hated this stage in peri, i lost my appetite, i would say to you go with how your body feels, i think short term omeprezole was fine with me but not long term x

Also dont fear the endoscophy, i have had three in my time one without sedation, i advise having sedation and it is over before you know it. I can relate to your fear of having one, but it is such a great feeling to be instantly told that it isnt anything serious, which in your case im sure it's nothing more than peri related. The short term fear of worrying about the endoscophy out weighs the on going fear of wondering what is wrong with you x

I am suffering from acid in tummy as well. Started off as a gnawing in stomach then went to nausea and now no appetite. It has brought on anxiety where I tremble and urinate allot. Went to urgent care they tested for pylori bacteria and its negative. I bet this is all stress . Worried that it's ulcers as well. They prescribed Pepcid so just started that last night but it takes 5 days to kick in . I just don't feel right and can't sleep and fast heart rate. Seeing my dr next week but that is too long. I'm not into medication lol but desperate . What did you do for your anxiety?? Thanks blessings hope everyone gets better!!!

Hi Teresa

i got a herbal remedy called Batch flower for anxiety and panic attacks, us all natural and doesn't interfere with anything and is completely safe, it has been my miracle cure, just 6 drops a day and I feel like a different person, it's not cheap but it sure as worked for me, I wouldn't be without it now , if you google it it comes up xx

Thank you so much for sharing ! I might try this!! Thanks so much it's so nice when someone else understands !!!
