Gastroenteritis and still have diarrhoea after 5 days. Can I go to work tomorrow afternoon

Hiya,

Any advice appreciated as I'm not experienced with time off sick.

I developed some form of gastroenteritis last Wednesday evening, almost certainly as a result of handling infected rodent poo ( I work in a pet shop). I do not yet know if it is salmonella, e-coli etc or something a bit less scary and expect results tomorrow.  My fever is now gone and cramps are getting better but I still have fairly bad diarrhoea today. It may have cleared up by tomorrow but can't say. My boss wants to know if I can work tomorrow afternoon (although not being pushy). Is this a definite no-no? Will I still be infectious?

Many thanks for any help!

You're most infectious from when your symptoms start until 2 days after they've passed. Stay off school or work until your symptoms have stopped for 2 days.

Hi Sophie. I have gastroenteritis and your and your symptoms don,t really match. It is usually diagnosed by a gastropy- camera down your stomach. It is a severely painful condition in the upper section of the abdomen, just under th the middle of the ribcage. You normally have have bouts of nausea and vomitting after food . You have to be careful what you can eat. What you have sounds more likely to be a bacterial /infection in the Bowell. Possible. A food intolerance or inflammatory bowel disease. Its more likely to be a virus or stomach bug due to the pain and diarrhea so its not likely you will be able to go to work this week. Stick to a liquid diet for a couple of day and plenty of water. Get well soon.
