Some people are promoting taking gelatin as part of the protocol for forming strong bones. Why? Any controlled research to prove this? I have heard it *may* help joint function in osteoarthritis.
Hi Anhaga. Good question! My grandmother said its good for brittle nails & bones. Bet they do not say how it can cause you to feel ill & take at your own risk thingoes hmmmm..

The teenagers used to take gelatin when I was a kid, saying it would strengthen their nails. I have since heard that this is a myth. But I guess there may be something to the idea that it helps the collagen in the joints. No idea how much you'd need, though.
Lots of foods, cosmetics, vaccines contains gelatin & used also for rheumatoid arthritis (there has been evidence to support this) as the collagen in gelatin acts as a cushioning effect on the bone joints. Now we are evolving into the medicinal supplements that has already found people to suffer with allergic reactions, stomach upsets, bloating, constipation etc., Big warning for pregnant women or those who are breast feeding as they have not yet determined if this supplement is safe..
I see Deb ,I am very caotious about supplements also . There are a lot of companies making them and sometimes they do not contain what they claim or they have added other toxic ingredients .But I was talking about buying gelatin and use at home to make jell-o like dessert without sugar ,just with fruit juice .
Probably we should stick just with our soups ? But as I mentioned somewhere a lady I know ,and she is 95 now ,she used to have every day a jell-o for years as her DR told her to do so for strong bones . WE shoul look on a jell-o pachage and see hogy much gelatin has a litte one ?
I have to admit that I love jell-o that has been around for ever & I do use it for making jelly slice.. everything in moderation There are a lot of companies promoting supplements that contain potent formulas. Unfortunately, there is not enough info warning people of the possible side effects. Please dont get me wrong, Im very much 'FOR' vitamins & supplements if Im a little slack with fruits, vegetables & meats. 10 months ago, I researched supplements & advised that I needed to take potassium as I was suffering back pain. Few weeks later, I ventured into a huge 'alternative medicine' store & purchased my potassium med for half the price. Lady very obliging & asked why I was taking this supplement.. totally stunned when she informed me that potassium had no effect what so ever unless I was taking magnesium to help my body absorb the potassium. Few weeks later, I thought I had something wrong with my stomach & passed it off as a virus of some sort. Continued to feel worse, made an appointment to see GP. Blood tests showed a high level of magnesium. I posted a question today about an elbow complaint that is so painful & wakes me during the night. I have received no answers to my question, hmmmm not sure if this is another problem related to the magnesium supplement?

Oh dear, it just shows doesn't it. Magnesium has always helped me and my joints I must admit. I have taken a supplement for years, since being diagnosed with M.E./Fibro as it is a muscle relaxant. Since the OA I have tried all sorts, including Devil's Claw and Green Lipped Mussel. Certainly my OA worsens due to changes in air pressure Since the OP a friend told me about the gelatin ...not to help with the OP but to help with my OA as she herself suffered, and I think the gelatin does help a bit.
Sorry to hear about your elbow...could it be tennis or golfer's elbow? IE a tendon problem? Wearing a support, like a tubigrip might help a bit?

I don't think you'd get the same benefits form the vegetarian subsititutes.
Hi carrie. Its awesome to see the feedback. I would be continuing to take anything that proves to be working. Do have a lot of respect for the oldies for sure & their remedies for a variety of things. Im just one who probably thought that going big in a potent formula would have a greater effect when I perhaps would have been better off going smaller with magnesium & potasium.. THANK YOU for your advice about elbow sweetone.. I was advised by another lady that it could be possibly a tennis elbow, appointment with gp 2.30pm. I take for years magnesium and never had high level of it I think with very little pause I am taking MG for 30 y now as I developed smasmofilia ,a condition largely accepted by european medical schools but was never accepted from american school --they were listing the condition like panick attack. It is false as spasmofilia goes with muscle spams from low calcium and magnesium levels .And even if the levels in blood are ok one has to ask for the levels in cells where both calcium and magnsesium are so important .And yes my levels in cells were low .After I was put on CA and MG I slowly recovered from the condition and never had to take antipanik medication .So I would say european school was right about .Nw slowly the american school is starting to accept this condition .
.First ,I will ask you how much magnesium had that supplement? I take like 500 mg a day sometimes 350 mg .
Also I will tell you something I know for sure .what I will say now--who ever told yoy that potassium needs magnesium to be absorbed told you so because
1---she wanted to sell more products or
2--she was uniformed (to be indulgent )
My advice to everyone --never take advise from a seller of supplements .they are not well informed ,they do not require a course in anything ,they mislead people .
There are noe more and more dr in america talking about the imp of MG for muscles -including heart muscle ,nerves , I would say there is a a fantastic book written by a fantstic dr in america .I will write another message with her name and the name of the book maybe it will go through moderators filters .

I am so grateful to you for the info re; mag & potassium.. Oh lord, cant believe that I was well & truly conned by a well spoken so called 'alternative medicine consultant' grrrrrrr to her grrrrrrrr I was advised to purchase 2 magnesium formulas, 1,250mg + a 500mg, potassium am/pm. Also followed her advice by consuming large amounts of green leafy vegetables, tuna (something I find hard to eat) & a variety of nuts.. Biggest nut here is me hun.. My redemption or hers? hmmmmm People like her should not be selling a damn thing!! How many other people are they harming & all for the sake of money? grrrrrrr Surely this would be illegal? New respect towards magnesium with thanks to you lovelies... THANK YOU xxxx
