I just have to say that your doctor was wrong, I have HSV-2 and had a baby 5 weeks ago, normal delivery and he is very healthy and breastfed, theres only a high chance of passing the virus on if you catch HSV during your pregnancy, the chance of passing it on becomes considerably lower (like 1%) if you already had it before pregnancy, yes I took antiviral meds to lower the risk of an outbreak during delivery, and yes if you have an outbreak while in labour you will probably have a c-section.
Hi Dianne, a friend of mine had an outbreak at the time she went into labour and so they did a c-section; she was told it was to protect the baby's eyes from picking up the virus because repeated outbreaks of herpes on the cornea causes scarring and problems with vision.
