Getting better a week at a time

Hi fellow hippies and hippies to be.

As most of the regulars know I have had a really rough time of it when I had my left hip done just over 10 weeks ago.

Just thought I would let you know how I am getting on now.

Left hip is fine just a few little niggles and twinges and still swollen on the thigh and knee  a little. Top 1/2 of scar all feeling has returned lower 1/2 of scar still a lillte numb about 1/2 way along and about 3" short of the top of the scar. But all clean dry and no sorness.

However the right hip which has collapsed is hurting as is the knee and I can not extend the knee. Although there is good news It has taken just over 3 weeks since the joint collapsed for the intence pain to subside. I can walk a little but not put much weight through the right leg so the left is taking much of the punishment. I am sleeping better. but tend to sleep better in the day than I do at night. I still have had no physio or instruction on how to lay on my side so still sleeping on my back. the headaches on a morning are slowly getting less. I have stopped all oramorph unless I really need it now. but I am still taking co codamol but every 6 hours instead of every 4. I guess you could call that progress. Walking is very painful. But I know if I don't try my left leg will be next to useless to me when I have my right hip done so I just try and do it best I can. There has been a mess up with my physio so no idea when the hydro therapy will start now. I may even be in for my right hip to be done before I get the chance because there has been a mix up some where along the line where I was going to be sent to a hospital closer to home but does not have a hydro pool and there is no way I can do the other excersizes without the support of water. I do feel a lot better in myself and I am totally aware n ot to over do it and make things worse again.

I do feel like I am starting to come out of the worst side of things now though for sure.

At least things are looking a little better and the swelling I had in both legs after the right hip joint collapsed has  gone down a lot. Still unsure if the extra swelling was caused by the two viles of anti colagulant injections or the hip collapse to be honest but either way I have put that down in my personal health records just incase I am allergic.

Hi Hailea

Nice to hear your news and glad you are feeling brighter

Have a good night

Kind wishes Lindaxx

Hi Hailea,

Quite a journey you are on.  I see you are fighting the good fight by looking for the positive in all stages.  By any chance is there an anti-gravity treadmill in your area?  This machine takes the place of water in that you can control how much weight is lifted off of your joints while you walk. I use one at least two times a week and some folks in your NHS found them.

My personal hip journey was rough also and now that I am finally fixed up, I look back and wonder how on earth I made it through and then my next thought is that I found this web site.  I thank God for this site and all the wonderful people on here who helped me when I was at the worst part of my journey.

So, I wish you the best and encourage you to keep your spirits up as you seem to be doing and remember that as a patient you have rights and can insist certain things are done to your liking.  You need your left leg to be at its strongest to carry you through when the right hip is done!  I know my right THR tooka beating for almost two years while compensating for the other and today during my first body massage, it became quite apparent that my compensating leg is suffering.

That old saying of "The squeaky wheel gets the oil" is true.  Squeak and get what you need.

Hope things continue to improve and you get a date for your next op soon

Good morning Hailea ... I am happy to read your update and feeling lighter -- it takes some courage, I think, to share our frustrations, disappointments, pain etc, but thank God for this forum and all of you here .... it allows us to whine, rant and rave and acknowledge that at times, it sucks .... and also read and share our victories and accomplishments .... in that sense, we are all one ...

I am going through some rough patches myself right now ...

Well done Hailea, keep it up girl, the sooner you get your other hip done the better hope it gets sorted soon xx

Hang in there Hailea - its inspiring to hear your positive attitude despite your problems. Keep up the good work.

Big hugs xxx

Slow progress is still progress Hailea!

It's good to hear that things are looking up if only a little, though it sucks that PT screwed up.

I've been avoiding as much of the strain as possible on my unoperated hip and have found that the operated one is already a lot stronger than I thought it was.

I stand on that operated leg a lot now, with some support from a crutch, to avoid too much strain on the bad side. And that helps. Like you, I want the 'new leg' to be able to carry when the other hip is done.

Keep going strong, once you have had the other operation, I'm sure that those clouds overhead will clear up more to allow the sun to come out!

Hugs,

Arjan

Thank you Linda x

Hi Gillcat

Thank you yes so do I although as I said to renee I am now really dreading it..x

Thank you Rosie x

Thank you Arjan

Having spent most of the morning between one hospital and another and my surgeons secretary sorting out my physio. I will now have to wait till August 3rd for an assesment apointment before hydrotherapy can go ahead. Which means I may only get one try at it and back in for my right hip.sad

Dear Hailey and Dawn

Long and fascinating journeys for all of us.

.

The anti gravity machine sounds amazing! Someone wrote that there is one in the small Torbay hospital...not so tho at the major royal devon and Exeter hospital.

Too late for me now at 4 monhs in practice...tho the thought of spinning round the ceiling in a white suit like Neil Armstrong sounds awesome.

Bright blessings

Mic

Hi Dawn I thought I had replied to you but can't find the post. eek

Yes it has been a bit of a rollercoaster for both of us.

No the nearest anti gravity treadmill to me is Bristol which would mean a train journy. Something I just could not face right now.

Yes you are right and it isn't for want of getting my left leg stronger. It is the state of the NHS here that is the problem. Until your treatment starts you have anything from 4 to 6 weeks to wait just to be assessed that what you are asking for is the right treatment. My Helth service is the worst in the UK and it is annoying for sure. sad

Hi Mic

Hope you are well. Yes this last 10 weeks has been a real eye opener and has tested my usually calm and understanding self to the core. I have never ever had problems like this with any other operation. I am so shocked I have ended up like this.  Yes the anti gravity machines do sound great but none here where I am. surprised

Hi Maggie

I thought I had replied to you but that post has disapeared. That is two in the same thread now. Thank you for your kind post. x

Hmm yet another post has disapeared. Sorry reenee I did reply to you I am not sure what is going on.sad

Thank you for your kind words. and yes you are right it is good to have a forum like this. It helps those that have had the op done and are having bad days or issues and it also helps those that have yet to have the op done. After evey thing I have gone through I am really dredding having the right side done. I know it has to be but this op has really knocked my confidence and I hate hospitals and am scared at the best of times. All that pain and swelling was caused by an allergic reaction to the 2 viles of anticolagulent that A & E gave me so I won't be having that again.

Glad to see you are saying positive things. Slightyl reducing the painkillers is exactly how I did it. I don't take in the day now but still do at night and am gradually trying to reduce the codeine. I still have an achy back and sometimes rub ibuprofen gel on it.

It might take you some time but at least some parts are improving and when you get the other one done you will be a whole lot better!

Hi anne

Sad to say I have had to up my meds again today. Only taking the oramorph if I really have to. But today for me pain wise is absolute hell.

I don't want to go back to 2 x 30 / 500 co codamol every 4 hours it caused me more problems. So just taking 2 every 6 hours or until I can't stand the pain any more.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope you are doing well.x
