Getting into an SUV

Ok folks! Here comes another one of my many questions.

How do you get into an SUV?

The seats sit up a bit higher than a car and I'm finding it almost impossible to get into the conventional way because of the lip on the side of the seats.

Any suggestions?

I adjusted the seat to a lower level then folded a towel so when you place it on the seat it fills the seat to the lip , have the the towel in a bin liner so it's easier to slide you round . Back yourself in then sit on seat then hold on to the handle above the door and put one hand  just to the side or just behind you somewhere in the middle of the front seats ,lift and slide yourself round . I've got a 4x4 never been in a SVU so not sure if this helps and sorry if I not explained that well  but it might help

Sorry should of said also place non op foot on car chasey to push yourself up , good luck it does gets easier

A step into car would be a good idea if you can get one .

I think I didn't ask the right question.

How do I get across the strip of the car between the door and the seat. It looks like a strip of heavy duty plastic like a running board. I would have to pull myself over this strip and then up and onto the seat.

I have a Ford Escape and at first I backed up to it, sat on the seat and then brought my legs around, carefully. You can push yourself up with the opposite foot if needed. Which is really the proper way for anyone to get into a vehicle. I also put a folded towel at the back of the seat to hold me more level. An suv is actually better for you than trying to get into a low car. It's more ergonomically correct. I was driving three weeks post surgery and know if I had a regular car I would never have been able to get in and out. It's like sitting on the ground! Anyway, now after 4 mo post op, I just get into my vehicle any way that feels good that day!

Hi Miele,

I found getting into and driving my old truck (Frontera) far easier than driving my run around Citroen.  The pedals are in a better position.  Also it has a footplate so I step onto that with left (good) leg and then lower myself down onto the seat. I am short 5'1", then slide my op leg in... easy!  Also easier to get out of.    Not too sure about modern SUVs, but then they are not really 4 X 4s are they... Like to see those across the muddy fields and tracks !!!lol

Does the SUV have running boards? Mine does and I figured out how to climb in and out safely through two THRs. I found it easier than trying to get in and out of a low to the ground car. I am tall though, 5 foot 8 inches.

Let me know if you have running boards.

They're not actual running boards where I can step up on them to get into the car but rather it's the gap between the car seat and the door. It looks like a running board but it just seems to separate the seat from the door. I need to figure out a wy to get up over the gap and to try to sit into the SUV. I'm only 5'3" so I can't just back myself up to the seat to get in.

Thank you!
