I am beyond myself. I did a culture swab for herpes and my doctor e-mailed me saying everything was normal/negative and to wait for the final results. Two days later she e-mails be saying i tested positive for HSV -1 and i have cold sores. She then casually says that HSV-1 normally appears on the lips but can also be elsewhere. I had unprotected sex with a new partner and two days later i saw the bump. i also shaved right before sex so i figured this was just an ingrown hair. I am so upset that this happened to me and i dont know what to do. The bump has disappeared and the only pain i experienced was slight discomfort urinating for about two days. My doctor is treating it like its nothing I should be worry about but i just got an incurable disease- why shouldnt I be worried? I feel like my life is over.
Hi there, please take a deep breath, there is no reason to freak out. The main reason there is nothing to worry about is because more people in the world have HSV than do not, so what’s to freak out about? A couple of things to address here, which results were positive, the swab, or a blood test?
HSV-1 can appear on both the mouth, and the genitals. HSV-1 on the genitals is so mild that there are not really any confirmed cases of genital to genital HSV-1 transmission! Second, anyone who has an established HSV-1 infection (again, most of the entire world!) then they are at no real risk of acquiring it genitally.
But before we go any further, can you confirm exactly which results were positive?

Thanks for the prompt reply, i just feel as if my life is over. My friends wont want to share anything with me, how do i tell my parents? My friend was dating this guy with herpes and she said it was the biggest mistake of her life–now i feel no one will want me. Vaginal lesion culture (only one bump) preliminary test was normal/negative. Then two days later I get an email saying the culture came back positive for HSV-1. My doctor also said its usually cold sores on the lips, but it can appear elsewhere. This bump appeared two days after having unprotected sex with a new partner. Ive tested negative for herpes before and now this? Sorry but this is just a horrible way to start my year.
