Girdlestone Procedure

My Mum’s husband is having one of these next week, they live in Spain and don’t really understand what the consultant is telling them sooooo…

Can anyone please tell me how long you are likely to be in hospital and how long the recovery period is once you are home?

Many thanks

I do have a friend who had a thr in spain, it is pretty much the same as here 2-3 days in hospital. They should take someone with them to translate either a friend or pay someone normally 15-20 euros. Recovery depends on the person some get on with it others make a drama out of it. Should be walking with crutches on second day, then exercises start and walking everyday with the crutches for a few weeks.

Hi there

From what I can gather, the Girdlestone Procedure is not like a typical hip replacement operation. It appears to involve removal of the head of the femur (thigh bone) so that the bone that is left can fuse with the socket that the head of the femur occupied. It inevitably results in the operated leg being shorter and also the hip joint being rigid and unable to bend.

If this is indeed what is being done then they need to realise the implications and possibly get someone fluent in Spanish to go with them to see the surgeon and have things explained in detail
