giving away my hip replacement aid and equipment to anyone who lives in London

Hey guys, I had my hip replacements done a year ago and now I would like to pass all my aid and equipment to someone who can benefit from it. I live in London so anyone who can collect things is welcomed to take my stuff.

I have:

-crutches,

-walking frame,

-stick that picks up stuff from the floor when you are not allowed to bend

-v-shaped pillow to put between your legs when you sleep so that you don't cross your legs accidentally,

-2 pillows of different shape that take off pressure from your lower back from sitting for long period of time or being immobile,

-raised toilet seat.

I hope someone can benefit from these things that helped me to go through my recovery!

What a great way to celebrate this milestone! Congratulations.

I hope you are doing very well. I get my 2nd hip in 2 weeks and cannot wait.

Anyway ... congratulations!

In Exeter the Red Cross take aids, so they can be given out again

Fantastic idea, must remember this when I finally get my hip joint sorted.

Hey Sheila! Oh I should check if Red Cross in London takes aid! Thanks for an idea

If any of these were issued by an NHS hospital they should be returned there. In Leeds I have had to sign paperwork which states if I dont return items I will be charged, and the cpsts were not cheap. So check first.

Dear josey

A few years back now I sprained my ankle and was given crutches at whipps cross hospital part of  East London National Trust. When I stopped using them  I took them straight back as they were brand-new and only a few weeks old and they refused point blank to take them. In the end I took them, I think,  to the St John's brigade charity section and they were most grateful for them. I believe there is even an article today on this very large wastage by the NHS in the Daily Mail. At the time I thought it was quite criminal but was told it was not economical to reuse them… Dot

My paperwork says that they "will collec t them" but just to dispose of them - as you say, such a waste

Very nice gesture. I also thought of that and glad I didn't. Needed a THR a few years later. It was handy to have.

My health authority issued me with a raised toilet seat and frame and perching stool and the hospital gave me crutches.

The hospital had large bins for returned crutches, so I returned them when I had my review with the surgeon and then contacted the HA to collect the other bits.

I had to buy my own grabbers and long handled sponge.

Isn't it strange how the different Health Authorities have such disparate practices.

Hey Josey! Thank you for letting me know. I should be fine since all my aids were bought by myself, my surgery was done privately. It was expensive but I hope someone in need can benefit now

hi I'm getting really frustrated with this website and the amount of times I lose a message. Now trying to find my original discussion under hip replacement leading to paralysis and I can't find that or any way of  of finding who runs this website to ask. Anybody out there could assist me. I will so find it amusing that they say report a problem but how can you win the whole messages disappeared  !! Regards!! Regards.  dot

Hi Dot - the system is really quite jumpy again I agree. I lost a few posts today and earlier this weekend.

Try going to your profile page and browse through your discussions. I think the one you are looking for is on page 2.

If you have grief getting to your profile - just press your icon on your last post and it should bring you there.

Let me know if you have problems with this and I will try pasting it into my reply for you.

Hugs,

L
