I had my tkr in May 2019. Mia June 2019 revision Sept 2019 . My leg is weak my muscles are shrunk . now my foot is in pain to the point I can not rest it. I have been on cane for months and keep getting told it is not my knee I think it is caused by knee ?
Two articles to consider…
- A TKR can cause a lot of pain elsewhere in your body as you subconsciously shift your weight around…
- You have to do the work to get the results. This is not easy and it takes a while. Endurance before strength. This will get you your legs back…
Finally…

Hi Larry,
Wondering what was wrong with your first TKR that you had to have a revision? Did you go for physio? Its important to build those muscles to support the knee after a TKR.I had my left TKR NOV 2018 and my revision was September 2019. i only used a cane for 4 weeks. I go to the gym 3 times per week and focus on building the leg muscles.
That was a very short window from TKR to MUA to revision. What was the reason and was it the original surgeon who did the revision? What tests have you had for them to rule out the knee as the problem? Maybe a nerve was affected by the surgery.
To rebuild the strength in your leg after all the trauma it’s been through you need someone who can guide you safely through a programme of rehab. Maybe hydrotherapy would help as there’s not so much weight put on the knee. Otherwise I would suggest you find a surgeon who specialises in revisions and ask for a second opinion. Whereabouts are you?
I live north of Indianapolis. The reason for mua after original tkr was no motion . I did have a well respected surgeon this has been he’ll.
Do you mean you had no movement at all? Sorry you are having such a rough time. If they don’t think the knee is causing your foot problems, have they given any indication as to what it might be? I wonder if a nerve conduction study might help.
I keep getting shuffled from Dr to Dr. one of them wants to kill two of my nerves they all have said it is related to my gait which I figured that out a long time ago.
Just a thought …if its your gait, has anyone suggested orthodics to help with your walk. As recommended earlier you would benefit from water exercises.
Yes, water is GREAT. However, I disagree on the orthotics. The main cause of differential leg length is that the hips are misaligned (see my “Other Pain” link above). This is VERY common post-TKR. Orthotics, especially custom ones, are very expensive and do nothing for the underlying alignment issue. I got a case of sciatica 5-weeks post-op and immediately saw my chiropractor. My differential was over 3/4 of an inch.
I saw her 3X/week for 2 weeks and then 2X/week for 2 weeks. All fixed and out of all that pain. Just get those hips realigned. If you’re uncomfortable with chiropractic, then any PT can do the same thing.
Have you had a proper gait analysis? It sounds as if you need to be properly assessed by someone with a holistic approach. Chico mentions hip misalignment, which is something I suffer from and see a chiropractor for because I have scoliosis and I did also have some foot discomfort for about a month after my recent TKR to correct my knock knees. Years of being knock kneed meant my whole leg was misaligned - hip, knee and foot. Now my leg is straight my foot turns out. I’ve been told if it’s the same in 10 months they’ll do a gait analysis.
