Considering the BPH surgery, I have been helped by medication ( rapaflo and oxybutynin 5mg) as to frequence between urination, it has improved to about every 2 hours and most nights i get to sleep through depending on liquid consumption in the evening, beer is the worst dam it. I still have the occatioal little squirt if I wait to long after I get the urge and I already have Retro from the meds for the rest of my life. So I guess my ? is at 66, is the surgery worth it when meds seem to be working, and would it return me to normal urinary function, pre enlargment of the P.
If you have prostate problems drinking beer does not make common sense, it irritates the Prostate. It is dumb unless you feel addicted. Rapflo or Flomax did not help me. and I had greenlight procedure.But ask all the people on the site which direction you should go to, They are a very friendly,informative and life saving bunch of people on this site. Incidently, there are some crazy urologists out there and unfortunately I met some, you can not take the first persons opinion they could do you harm. Just because he is a medical specialist does not mean he is normal or competent. remember this..

All medications will probably just delay the inevitable. Provided that your BPH has not already caused bladder or kidney damage one of the procedures should improve your symptoms and quality of life.
PAE if you could get it now seems to be the best option. In the UK GreenLight XPS is now preferred by NICE over TURP and other surgery.
Hi Namvet, Thank you for your sevice. I have similar symptoms. I'm on fernasteride and flomax. I pee pretty good during the day. Night get a little tricky. Sometimes I pee good at night and other nights my stream is pretty weak. I am planning on FLA surgery in Spring. I'm 59 and definately think its worth it. The meds stop working for some men. You mention retro from the meds being permanent. I don't think that is true. Most men regain ejaculatory function after being off the meds for a while. I suppose if you can live with the symptoms you could wait it out. There are numerous new procedures being tested. I think in the near future ( < 5 years ) there will be plenty of options that leave everything working and insurance will pay for.

Given the combination of drugs you're taking, it's hard to tell what is causing your issues. Do you know your post void residual (PVR)? That's the amount of urine left over after you void. Your urologist should have measured that before prescribing any drugs. Have you had a cystoscopy? Any imaging studies?
Surgery can help an obstruction caused by the prostate, but again, unclear if that is your problem.
To put your symptons in perspective, search for "IPSS" on the internet an take the five minute test and report back.
As others have said, don't rush into any kind of surgery without a full understanding of the risks and rewards. Sometimes it can do a lot more harm than good.

Namvet, ditto what mark just said. My first uro was gunho to do a turp. He had the scope insideme says you need surgery, He said we'll schedule you for TURP and walked the room. He didn't wait for me to ask a questions. By the grace of God work and other circumtances got in the way so I canceled the TURP. Then I found this forum with lots of guys giving their experiences. Its a great place.
I had one surgery (TUNA - needle ablation) that worked for about 10 years. Last year, my doctor prescribed tamsulosin (similar to Rapaflo) - an alpha blocker. Took tamsulosin for about 9 months. It didn't work as well as your med is working for you. For me, tamsulosin reduced my endurance -- couldn't run, play tennis, other activites that required endurance. Also, my night time visits to the bathroom increased over time - 3-4 times a night. So, my doctor recommended another procedure. I am 68. I had a urolift last month. It worked as advertised for me so far and I'm off the tamsulosin. Others have had success with other procedures. Others continue on medicine. It's really up to you.

I find it puzzling that you can sleep through the night and yet urinate frequently during the day. Do you take in a lot of fluids during the day? I myself drink 2 mugs of coffee, a mug of tea, and some water in the morning so I have daytime issues as well. But I also have nightime issues even though I reduce fluid intake after midday. If you're concerned about RE you might consider cialis daily in place of rapaflo. It's expensive but you avoid the RE issue and it can reduce ED symptoms as well. I think my symptoms are worse than yours and I've quit taken flomax (not effective) and I'm not contemplating surgery at this time. Maybe later if symptoms get worse. Good luck whatever you do.
Are you planning on the FLA in Houston or New York? I am still considering either PAE or FLA. Flomax seems to work alright although some nights I have trouble starting which is a little scary. I also would like to not have the various side effects that come with Flomax.
Nam If the pills are working why rock the boat. Taper off on the beer. You could end up with more problem then you have now. Don't be force into anything. Ken
I can confirm that retro doesn't have to be permanent in that I ejaculate normally now that I don't need to take Tamsulosin.
Yuo probably have BPH (because the meds helped) but you don't have a diagnosis. The things that jimjames outlined are standard to diagnose it - particuarly the scope. Have one done, confirm that you in fact have BPH, then, depending on the results (size, where the obstruction is, etc.) there are options available, including some new ones that carry comaratively less risk and work well in most cases - if you decide to go that route.
For starters, I would switch Rapiflo to Alfusozin as it works as well in many cases and doesn't usually cause RE. When you get some details, we can help you more with options and what the doctors don't always tell you.
I'm curioud pepasan how long did it take to return to normal ejaculation after you stopped tamsulosin? Anyone else have experience with this?

I've taken Tamsulosin a few times although not for more than a month each time. I returned to normal ejaculation within a few days.
Really, I thought it took longer than that. I've been on it since June 2016. I have a 30 sample pack of 5 mg cialis. I'm going to give it a try soon. Hope my urine flow won't slow too much when making the transition
