Globus hystericus

Hi, my problems started in March 2012 with the feeling like a hair was stuck in my throat. It progressed to feeling like there was constantly something in my throat. After a few weeks of this I went to the Dr who referred me to ENT clinic. A camera was put up my nose to check my throat and they said my throat looked very healthy and to come back in 8 weeks if I was still having problems. The feeling never went away (every day feeling there was something in my throat) so I went back. I then had a camera under general anesthetic in the September, again nothing was found. I left it but the discomfort felt worse. I have been back to the doctors today and they have diagnosed me with this globus hystericus, I have never heard of it until today. The symptoms do seem to fit though. The symptoms I have are constant feeling of cattarh that isnt there. Choking especially when talking, this is worse some days more than others. I have developed a bit of a phobia of touching my neck in case I find any lumps. I have suffered health anxieties for years so it does seem a reasonable explanation for my symptoms. The only thing that relieves it is if I am eating or drinking, so I have put on about 2 stone in 2 years.

Hi there ursula321

Your sore throat sounds like mine down to checking for lumps all the time this anxiety thing sucks

all the reassurance we get given is never enough l sometimes think that everyone is wrong and I'm the only

Person that is right but I don't want to be so please take some advice keep reading everyone else on this

Forum and I'm telling you now it does helpxxxx happy reading

Hi Ursula

Have not got your symptons but have health anxiety, but wanted you to know have seen your post and feel for you,but as been said the forum can help.xxxx

I am surprised they called it ''Hystericus'' now, as it is usually just known as ''Globus'' It was believed it happened in women who were over anxious. but it is a very uncomfortable thing to have, also men get it too.

I am constanlty trying to clear my throat by coughing, but it never works. I do think after a while there must be

inflammation there with all the attempted clearing and coughing.

I have tried cough medicines both calmers and expectorants, I occasionally get up a little Phlegm but it is

back again in a few minutes.

I don't think there is anything that can be done for it.
