Globus Sensation

So I've recently had a feeling that a piece of food was stuck in my throat. I feel it on the lower right side of my throat. I feel it more when I swallow. I tried drinking warm water and waited three days but no change. I have anixety and tend to panic and think the worse. I made an appt on the third day. My doctor did an examination and believes it's acid reflux. It could also be enlarged thyroids or just my anxiety making me feel like something is stuck.

Right now I'm taking zantac which treats acid reflux. I really hope it helps. I get a ultrasound Friday to see if my thyroid is enlarged. Anyone have any experience with this issue? I'm trying my best not to panic and think the worse but that's really hard for someone like myself that suffers from anixety.

Hi jay this is a horrible feeling i have had this lump in my throat for 9 weeks some days worse than others been to doctor 3 times now im referred to hospital for a upper endoscopy doctor thinks it could be globus am taking gaviscon advance and lansoprazle not really much change in this chocking feeling certain medicine can cause this am on naproxen hopefully you are not suffering to bad

Hi Jay,

I have been fighting globus for almost 6 months now. At first, it was around May of this year when i had several panic attacks due to Health Anxiety. I eventually developed Acid Reflux(GERD). My eating habits also had to do with it. I used to love eating spicy and acidic foods almost everyday. I would also eat during night times like an hour before i go to sleep which is not advicable if you have acid reflux.

So i went to see a doctor (ENT) due to chest tightness having hard time breathing. The doctor told me it was acid reflux. He put me on a 2 week course (Pantoprazole) to treat my reflux. My reflux was gone but one thing i didn't change was my diet. I kept eating spicy foods so after a week, my reflux came back and I could feel the acid even reaching my throat. Later i knew my Acid reflux turned out worse. I continued taking the meds without a doctors prescription. Around 3rd week of june, after playing basketball, i felt like there's something stuck in my throat like there's a golf ball in there. I panicked, thinking i may have throat cancer. All i had in mind was, "I got cancer".

So I set an appointment to see another doctor (ENT specialist). She checked my throat and performed laryngoscopy but found nothing. Her diagnosis was; GLOBUS Hystericus. I was so relieved.  [cheesygrin]

She explained to me what causes globus and how it's being developed. In most cases; Stress, Acid Reflux/GERD/LPR and Anxiety.

I have been keeping myself busy lately because the more you think about it, the more it bothers you. I listen to music, play basketball, working out, watch comedy movies and especially movies that would make me cry. Crying seems to help a lot cause it seems i've been holding back my tears for quite sometime now.

I've got to admit, the lump sensation is still here but i know for a fact im getting better and better everyday.

Cheers,

Japh

Thank you for your response. I have really bad anxiety and it's worse when it comes to my health. The reasonable side of me kept saying ok ok it's just a piece of food stuck, the worry in me kept saying tumor. It's hard explaining how I feel to someone that doesn't have anixety because they just don't get it. I'm taking zantac for acid reflux but I'm sure I won't really be OK until everything else is ruled out.

I try my best to calm down my anxiety. When im not thinking about it im ok. But as soon as i swallow it starts all over. after reading different post on here I'm thinking that the high level of stress is a major factor. Seems as though everyone mention having some sort of anixety.

Hope your feeling better jay it is really good to no that this illness is common . A really dont feel stressed but I no this is this is a factor hopefully the lump in the throat goes away soon take care

Hi Jay.

I too have just been told I have globus

sensation and like you I panicked in case it was something else. My doctor did a

thorough examination of my neck and said I had nothing to worry about. I also suffer with anxiety and depression which he thinks

might have been a trigger plus I get a bit of acid reflux from time to time. Its early days

and it comes and goes depending how

much I'm stressed. Hope things improve for

you soon.
