For several days I’ve had a gnawing ache center left lower chest upper abdomen with excessive belching. Four months ago I had an endoscopy for swallowing issues related to GERD the scope came back clear. I’ve never had this gnawing dull pain before and it is off and on all day not just when I eat. Also excessive belching off and on all day. When I get the gnawing sensation my anxiety goes up because I think it’s cardiac. Has anyone else had these symptoms. No heartburn.
To reduce belching you should avoid polyols/sugar alcohols.
You will find these ingredients commonly in sugar free drinks or fruit cordial/squash. They’re also in toothpaste so make sure to rinse thoroughly.
They often end in -ol, such as sorbitol. There is a full list of them which you can look up.
Additionally Chocolate has been shown to relax the lower esophageal sphincter which can contribute to belching and reflux. So you may find that avoiding chocolate improves your symptoms.
Albeit the belching may not go away entirely until you address the root cause.
Thank you. - I haven’t had chocolate in 9 months as I am needing to watch my cholesterol. I think the belching is due more to acid reflux and anxiety but it was the combination of belching and the ache in the center left chest that was concerning. I think it may have been due to the tightness of my bra trapping gas when I was sitting. I still belch but the ache in the chest has gone now. I have had an endoscope done in Feb and all was clear although there is a bit of narrowing in the throat/esophagus which he said if it gets worse he can stretch it out. I think I swallow air when I eat so I will try and be more mindful of that. Thanks for your reply.
