Go for a phased return to work if you can

Went back to work Monday after 8 weeks. By the end of the day exhausted physically and mentally. Got up yesterday morning and really didn't feel fit enough to go to work - thought of not going in and working today instead ( I don't normally work Wednesdays) - but went anyway. By yesterday evening legs swollen, heels sore because shoes had rubbed as feet swollen. Feel terrible today. I am such an idiot! Still technically signed off as well. So learn from me to- if you can do a phased return do! X

Hi Shirly, sorry to hear about your bad experience....I am signed off for 6 weeks with half pay and was thinking to return to work after 4 weeks because am getting too much pressure from my boss...now that I think about it I think I will take all 6 weeks, not looking forward to going back anyway, maybe time for a change.  Can't you take the remainder of your sick leave if you have permission anway?

Will take more time if I need it - see how I feel. They have been good and paid me full pay for the 8 weeks - plus I am waiting for the other hip to be done - so another chunk of time off.

It must be really difficult for you Hippies who are still working but going back to soon could make full recovery longer !

Hi Shirley, Sorry to hear about your bad experience although I don't know what you do or your age but I am 73 and although only work 4 hrs a day for 3 days a week, went back after 3 weeks, I work for my son and he didn't have anyone else to cover, so he picked me up in the morning and brought me home in the afternoon and I was fine but I only work on a computer and I took my cushion with me so that I didn't have to sit too low.  I am now looking forward to a knee replacement in July so I suppose I will do the same again.

kind regards Valerie

Hi Shirley I feel your pain 😁 I went back to work after 13 weeks quite a physical job getting in and out of my car numerous times a day and two weeks back I strained my back and was off for another four weeks. Apparently my back was weak from decreased activity after my op. That was also a phased return, so take it from someone who knows(the pain was excruciating ) and I was convinced I'd harmed my precious new hip, that to take your time getting back to work your health is more important than any job. I'm six months down the line now and I was very fit before my op but I don't have the same stamina I had previously and my consultant says it takes 12 months plus to get back to normal. I swim and do yoga but I'm still knackered excuse my term but it's the only way to describe how I feel, I'm 54 and back to my 30 hour a week job but it's hard, thinking of going back to the gym but scared I'll jigger myself up more, so take it easy and slowly you've only got the one body😀 good luck

Hi Valarie. I'm 57 and work in an office, but I have to drive 15 miles to work and then walk about 10 minutes fronpm the car park I leave home St 7.30 and get back just bofre 6pm so feels like a long day. Also worked out I went up and down stairs 8 times on Monday and as I live in a bungalow this came hard as well.

Have to say a lot of my problem is coming from the non operated hip - hopefully not too long a wait before that one gets done.

Hi shirley, i went back to work last thursday (6.5weeks post op) i have quite physical job making prototype fibreglass car parts ( doors , panels, bonnets etc). Definitely wish i had phased for a few weeks. Two days last week killed me off on saturday, now on fourth straight day this week...I'm feelin abit beat up atb jay
