Going back to work

Hi all

Haven't been on for awhile, I'm 9 weeks in and my leg feels as good as new, however I feel the real test comes now, im going back to work tomorrow and am feeling apprehensive to say the least. I am a digger driver working in construction, driving the digger is not my problem, it is everything else that goes with it. Putting my boots on, climbing into the machine, checking oil, walking on soft, uneven ground, being asked to give a hand to blokes when I know I'm not capable of doing them yet.

Although my leg is better than before, it still doesn't feel as strong as I hoped it would, also I still can't put my sock or tie up my laces on my operated leg, has anyone else had this? Does it come in time?

I can't wait to get tomorrow over and done with haha

Steve

I'm 8wks and I still can't put a sock on or tie my shoe laces. I'm not back to work yet probably around 12wks but I hope I'll be further on by then! Hop it goes ok good luck x

Hi Steve good luck with your return to work, I had to return to being a pensioner straight away- ha, ha. I still struggle with socks so do not bother but last week managed shoelaces and I am now week 10. Body still complains if I do too much but concentrating on the exercises, making sure I hold the positions for a count of 5 and this is making a difference. Still a long way to go but hopefully at my 4 month check up chief (w)hip will be pleased with me. He said I would be bungie jumping by then. Hope it is not compulsory and a new Physio exercise

Mind how you go on that digger

Hi Steve I'm a carpenter and do a lot of climbing on stairs lifts and bakers all day. I returned back to work 5 months after operation now I'm 7 months post op. I needed to make sure I can do the work. I tell my Foreman on the jobsite of my condition. They ease up on me.

climbing up and down I do that one step at a time. I try not climb like a normal person baby steps will do best. Good luck.

Desi from NYC US.

Good luck on your return to work, just be careful.

good luck on going back to work stephen please let us know how you get on.

Hi Tracy

Thanks for your reply, I'm sure work will be fine, if it's not I'll have to try again in a few weeks and just eat the million cans of tuna in my cupboard, haha, my leg feels brilliant I just don't want to jeopardise anything. Hopefully my back loosens up some, so I can tie my laces and put on my sock. That is the only thing holding me back really.

All the best on your recovery also 😀

Thanks for your reply Ann, I will go careful, I have to get back out in the real world sometime, I done my bungee jumping before my op in New Zealand, I don't think I would do again no matter how well my leg is, haha

I think I'm going have to up my stretching to get down to put on my socks, I'm nearly there but still so far away.

All the best Steve

Hi Desi

Cheers for your reply, yes I think I'm going back a bit early but needs must, I will take it easy, I will have to figure out the foreman before I tell him about the op, some of them will just run me off the job if they think I am a liability. It's a dog eat dog world.

All the best mate

Steve

Thank you very much Fiona, I will! 😀

Thank you Gill, I will let everyone know how I get on!

All the best!

Steve

had mine done on march 19 so am about the same as you although I'm retired, still can't put my slipper on, tried sitting in my car last week, only made things worse, still a lot of stiffness and pain at times just hope it improves, didn't help when I was back in again with a blood clot on my lung, only hope things will settle down soon and get back to some normality, I am always watching where I walk, and no good on rough ground, good luck.

Hiya Dorothy

Im sure it will all come good for you soon enough, my big test will be back at work, that is where I found it most difficult before the op, I was always hampered by my hip. I think that's why I'm worrying about it so much. I just want to be able to get on with my work and show I am capable of some hard graft.

All the best

Steve

Hi Stephen,

Strength will come with time. Listen to your body and rest when you can. I sure wish you the best!

Buying new work boots would be a good idea if you wore them prior to the surgery. You do not want to slip into bad walking form because your boots are worn one way and you are now walking a new way.

Take care!
