Going down with a cold and only 10 days to op - will the op be cancelled?

I've been feeling a bit out of sorts for a couple of days and this morning I woke up with a sore throat.  I had hoped that I had just been snoring during the night but the sore throat has got worse and I'm now feeling a bit snuffly.

I hope that it won't develop into a fully blown cold but if it does will my op be cancelled?

Oh dear! Cross fingers for you! They found I had a urine infection when I went for preassessment but I've been given 7 days of quite a strong antibiotic and there is still 3 weeks to go.. so pray the infection is sorted before the op date and your cold doesn't materialise !

Best! Merelina

I was warned not go get sick that last week before surgery! I avoided my grandchildren just in case. I would give it a few days, but if you still have a bad cold three days out from surgery it may need to be cancelled.

Yeah, I had a feeling that might be the case.

I will dose myself with Echinacea and vitamin C and hope that will get rid of it!

Fingers crossed!

You poor thing, hope you get well soon, Judith

Thanks Judith.

Poor you. This is all you need.If I were you just to be on the safe side is warn the Hospital. At least that way the ball, is in their court.Keep warm and rest up ,plenty to drink & painkillers. If in doubt ask your Gp to do a home visit regards Amanda h

Hi I hope things don't develop for you. But a ray of hope.....I had my pre op the other day and I'm due for surgery on the 23rd. Nurse was very experienced and basically said even if I had gone down with things like coughs and colds I would still be fine if I was at the end of it / or it was minor. She was very specific about not cutting or burning yourself though, as it is an extra open portal for infection. If I were you, if you do continue to get worse get seen quickly and get some antibiotics.

Oooh thanks jools - I will dose myself up over the next couple of days and keep my fingers crossed.

I'll watch out for you too, looks like we are getting done at roughly the same time!

Hi Jools

Where are you getting done?

Bearing in mind of course that antibiotics are ineffective against viruses, and can be used if the patient has, or is at risk of a secondary bacterial infection on top of the viral cold infection

west midlands. seeing is believing for me tho, can't help but worry that it might still not happen

I'm getting done (I hope) in West Sussex - it'll be my 2nd hip.

What about you - are you a THR virgin or an ol' timer like me?

hahahahaha! I'm a total hip virgin. I'm so glad I stumbled on this forum though. Its reassured me there are lots of like minded people in the same boat, and it's nice to air your questions / thoughts that maybe you don't feel you can ask the doctors and nurses

OMG yes - I found this forum just after I had been unexpectedly told that I needed a THR and had gone into complete panic mode.  I was terribly frightened and didn't want to have the op and posted as much on this site.  I was truly overwhelmed by the support and understanding I received.

It is so nice to be able to express your fears and not to be told 'Oh you'll be fine'.  (A particular phrase that drove me nuts - how did they know I was going to be fine, I DIDN'T know I was going to be fine - in fact the phrase annoys me now - grrrrr!)
