Going out

Had total hip replacement Tuesday and now at home. Can't believe how much LESS pain I am in. Can anyone tell me if I go out how do I use a 'normal' toilet without the disabled attachment pls.

Hello Crossy. Good to be in less pain. I used the disabled toilets and held onto hand rails whilst sort of squatting above. Worked for me xx

Hi welcome to this wonderful group!if you go out always ask for a disabled loo! You can buy a special key from your local council to allow you access to any disabled loo! Good luck! Please don't over do things! Remember you've had a major op! Regards Amanda

Either use a disabled loo, when you are stronger crouch over or, I carry a sheewee so I can go standing up

Hi crossy24 you are very brave thinking of going out so soon it was four weeks before I dare go out and then it was the supermarket I made sure I went to the toilet first though. I managed very well after that in disabled toilet and held onto the rails either side of the toilet. I never sit on a toilet outside my,home anyway 😊

Amanda be aware all the disabled loos I used were the same height as normal ones hence the reason I had to squat xx

Hi

I don't think you will be able to. I went out at 2 weeks post op and had to use a disabled loo, the hand rails were helpful but it was too low and I did find quite a bit of discomfort, in fact I found it quite frightening!

I am 4.5 weeks post op now and subsequent outings I have drank little before going out and whilst out to avoid the need to use the loo!

Hope things will be easier once the 90 degree rule has been relaxed.

Good luck!

Hi, I went out about 2 weeks post op to a charity do in a pub which didnt have a disabled toilet.  As I dont like sitting on public toilets, I put paper on the rim lol, then lowered myself down using my crutches to help me and kept my operated let out so the pain wasnt too bad.  It was scary but can be done, obviously not as comfortable as with a raised seat at home.  It is surprising how many disabled toilets do not have riased seats !!!

Good luck with your recovery and am pleased you are in less pain xxx

* operated "leg"

Hi Ann!you can get a portable raised toilet seat on Amazon! Hope this helps! Regards Amanda

Hi Amanda I am now 11 weeks post op so no worries for me. I was surprised that disabled loos are the same height for some reason I expected them to be higher. Being a photographer I think I will invest in a shrewee. I am outside such a lot

Cx

what is a shrewee Ann -

Hi I'm 5 weeks and haven't been anyhwere to need a toilet but I have been going for walks and found that all the seats are too low!- thinking of taking a rucksack and cushion next time!

Oops typo - she wee. Think they were designed for walkers and campers. It allows us females to pee standing up. Have not yet seen one but heard about them. Think you get them in camping stores or probably online these days. What fun - lets google it xx

Got my sheewee from Amazon, there are also other makes slightly different

Hiya Crossy,

I'm two weeks post op today and at home I use the regular toilet. I do however 'lower' muself gently onto the seat. For me it was actually a lot LESS comfortable using a raised toilet. I do keep the operated leg out though and 'slouch' a little to avoid any unease in the operated leg.

Outside, well, I'm a man, so if need be I'll stand. I just don't prefer it given my height (hidden in my name..)

My single rule in all I do is pretty much, don't rush. And if it starts to ache, or even gives undue tension, back up. So far it works very welk for me.

brilliant !!!!  but I need to wear a skirt then, right ?

Thanks for all the replies. You guys are amazing. Has anyone used a bath board? I only have shower over bath so having to wash yuk!  Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi crossy24 I got a bath board from the local red cross they lend them out for 3months I put a small stool near the side of the bath and put my legs on that and then over the side of the bath while sitting on the board worked very well

For a shower no, trousers OK. There are videos on YouTube on how to use. Advice is to practice in showere if possible first. If not that your own toilet before venturing out.
